Guest guest
It takes soul to reach Goloka/Vaikunthha one year from the time it leaves the body. The soul lingers around the body for 10 to 13 days. In order to free it from the body, it is recommended to cremate the body, in order to get rid of the attachment, and immerse the ashes in Holy River Ganges or similar. The soul travels via sun or moon depending upon the time/period of demise. For example, Bhishma Pitamah died at the end of December which falls in Dakshinayana ( from July 14 to January 13). Being a Yogi and a great devotee, Bhishma Pitamah sustained his life force (praana) until Jan 14, when it became Uttarayana ( Jan 14- July 13). In Uttarayana, the soul travels directly through sun unto Vaikunthha/Goloka; while if one dies during Dakshinayana- the soul travels via moon unto Sun, and then to Vaikunthha/Goloka. Uttarayana is considered more auspicous as compared to Dakshinayana. There is some reference to this in Bhagvad Gita http://www.asitis.com/8/26.html Chapter 8, Text 26 "Shuklakrishna gati hy ete jagatah sasvate mate; ekaya yaty anavrattim anyayavartate punah ! "According to Vedic opinion, there are two ways of passing the world- one in light and one in darkness. When one passes in light, he does not come back; but when one passes in darkness, he returns.
