Anyone who has gone to Vrndavana knows that the name of Shri Radha is written on almost every wall in the district. In recent years, similar quotes from sastra, bhakti poets, and other pious platitudes have been added to these. Several months ago, I saw one that said, "jab tak surakshit jamuna-jal, tab tak surakshit apana kal" (so long as Yamuna is protected, our future is safe). I was told that this kind of thing has been posted in prominent places by the so-called Hindu political party. On the surface, it seems just great, until one realizes that the same government that has been persuaded (through bribery) to allow various industries to dump most of the pollution that enters Yamuna's waters to begin with. Seen in that light, it looks more like it doesn't want to miss an opportunity to tug at the heart-strings of the locals while screwing up their environment and religious practices in one fell swoop.
