Why is it translated like this ?

Hare Krishna

 

kavim puranam anusasitaram

anor aniyamsam anusmared yah

sarvasya dhataram acintya-rupam

aditya- varnam tamasah parastat

 

WORD FOR WORD

kavim -- the one who knows everything; puranam -- the oldest;

anusasitaram -- the controller; anoh -- than the atom; aniyamsam --

smaller; anusmaret -- always thinks of; yah -- one who; sarvasya --

of everything; dhataram -- the maintainer; acintya -- inconceivable;

rupam -- whose form; aditya-varnam -- luminous like the sun; tamasah -

- to darkness; parastat -- transcendental

 

 

"One should meditate upon the Supreme Person as the one who knows

everything, as He who is the oldest, who is the controller, who is

smaller than the smallest, who is the maintainer of everything, who

is beyond all material conception, who is inconceivable, and who is

always a person. He is luminous like the sun, and He is

transcendental, beyond this material nature." [bG 8.9]

 

 

Here why the following two lines have been added in the translation:

 

1)who is beyond all material conception

 

2)and who is always a person

 

Because there is no correponding sanskrit in the sloka.

hare krishna.

 

acintya means incoceivable and parastat means transcendental. so the

lord is beyond material conception. as the supreme person is the

basis of even time, he is always a person.

I would say that "acintya-rupa" implies both of these, while several other words

also imply that He's a person, and "tamah parastat" similarly indicate the Lord

is beyond our mundane and ignorant notions.

hare krishna. there is a book bhaktivedanta purports explaining why

srila prabhupada loads his purport on to translation.

 

following is an explanation as per my understanding.

 

there is no rule prohibiting an acharya from doing so. also, no

other famous acharya translated but only purported word for word.

they also loaded the words with the meaning they found / intended to

convey. so srila prabhupada alone cannot be faulted for that.
