Heart Transplant

Hare Krishna,

Someone asked this exact question to Gopal Krishna Maharaj, I heard it on a

recording- . His answer was that the heart is just a 'seat' for the the soul.

The analogy he gave was that of a person (the soal) sitting on a chair (the

heart), thus changing the chair does not mean the soul is (re)moved.

Hope this helps

Srila Prabhupada explains this in Life Comes From Life in a conversation with

Dr. Singh (H.H. Svarupa Damodara Maharaja), pages 76--78 (the 13th morning

walk). In essence Prabhupada explains that the heart is a sitting place for

the soul, and he likens it to moving from one chair to another "...they simply

change the soul's seat...changing hearts is just a change of material bodily

organs. The heart is not the real source of life."

See the full text for a more thorough explanation.

I also heard a lecture once [though I cannot recall the name of the

speaker]. He described the same analogy as Prabhupada has regarding the

chair. He also mentions that if Krishna wills that the patient survive then

the soul enters into the new heart but if the patient was not meant to

survive then the soul leaves that body altogether and we see that the heart

transplant was unsuccessful!
