It has been suggested to me that he who is known as Aadi-Shankaracharya

appeared about 100 BC and established 4 principle matts yet is different to

he who appeared around 800 AD and expounded Advaita-vaad.

Hare Krishna. Please accept my hymble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The contention that Adi Sankaracharya was born before B.C is given credibility

due to the records of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetha. They substantiate their

claim from the fact that Kanchi Kamakoti Peetha has records of the

mathadhipatis till before B.C (Stephen Knapp has also spoken about this in his

book). The other 4 mathas do not accept this view, nor do they accept that

Kanchi Kamakoti Peetha is a bonafide peetha establshed by Sripada Adi

Sankaracharya. They say that the Kanchi peetha was actually a local peetha at

Kumbakonam which was later shifted to kanchipuram. Based on Kanchi peetha's

records, there was another acharya whose name was also Sankara (some call him

Abhinava Sankara) who lived around 800 A.D.

Sringeri is the only peetha which has an unbroken succesion of acharyas. Their

records have acharyas from around 800 A.D. There is a book written on this

controversy too.

Hope this helps.

Please correct me if the facts presented are incorrect.
