Where does it state that intoxication will destroy austerity? The SB

indicates that intoxication destroys mercy.

RV

The verses which discuss the effects of sinful activity are SB 1.17.24

and 1.17.25. In the purport to SB 1.17.25, Srila Prabhupada writes: "By

pride, either artifiical or real, the resultant action of austerity is

spoiled; by too much affection for female association [sex life],

cleanliness is spoiled; by too much addiction to intoxication, mercy is

spoiled; and by too much lying propaganda, truthfulness is spoiled."

Hare Krishna devotees.

The four pillars that support religion are austerity, cleanliness,

mercifulness and truthfulness. By intoxication, austerity is destroyed;

by illicit sex, cleanliness is destroyed; by meat eating, mercifulness

is destroyed and by gambling, truthfulness is destroyed. In the satya

yuga, as intoxication crept in, the pillar of austerity began falling.

In treta yuga, illicit sex was becoming prominent and so the pillar of

cleanliness fell.In dvapara yuga as meat eating began, the pillar of

mercy started falling. In kali yuga, as gambling is becoming more and

more common, the pillar of truthfulness is also falling....

Rupa vilasa prabhu, I have heard this from the lectures of senior

devotees/vaishnavas. I shall however find out more about this and the

explaination of the purport of srila prabhupada and let u know. Forgive

me for the poor knowledge of scriptures.
