Bhagavad Gita As It Is "on line " is a very good idea. But why begining with

the 17th chapter? Was BBT's permission not given for the previous 16

chapters ?

Sorry, I had intended to respond to this personally rather than simply allow

it through without a moderator note attached. The Bhagavad-Gita postings are

being continued from BTG-talk, where they have been going on for some time.

If memory serves, they not only started with the first chapter, but

continued through the entire Gita and restarted at least once. The fact that

it is on the 17th chapter now merely means that they finished the prior 16

chapters already on BTG-talk. But fear not! Once the cycle is complete, I

believe it will be restarted again from Chapter 1. So you can be certain

that you will not be missing any nectar. Stay tuned to Achintya for more

nectar BG postings with commentary by our beloved acharya!

Hare Krishna,

BHAGAVAD-GITA 17:19

mudha-grahenatmano yat

pidaya kriyate tapah

parasyotsadanartham va

tat tamasam udahrtam

WORD FOR WORD

mudha--foolish; grahena--with endeavor; atmanah--of one's own self;

yat--which; pidaya--by torture; kriyate--is performed; tapah--penance;

parasya--to others; utsadana-artham--for the sake of causing

annihilation; va--or; tat--that; tamasam--in the mode of darkness;

udahrtam--is said to be.

TRANSLATION

Penance performed out of foolishness, with self-torture or to destroy

or injure others, is said to be in the mode of ignorance.

PURPORT

There are instances of foolish penance undertaken by demons like

Hiranyakasipu, who performed austere penances to become immortal and

kill the demigods. He prayed to Brahma for such things, but ultimately

he was killed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. To undergo

penances for something which is impossible is certainly in the mode of

ignorance.
