Now that I actually have the VP, can you tell me what that verse is (and preferably give verse numbers if you have them)? - K

In this chapter, Maitreya Muni asked Parasara Muni how people can worship Govinda, Jagannatha, Vishnu. Parashara answered by referring to an older conversation between Aurva Muni and Sagara Maharaja. He then narrates that discussion, which includes Prabhupada's oft-cited "varNAzrAmAcAravatA" verse (3.8.9). I'm using the Gita Press Sanskrit/Hindi edition (pg.219-220, Gorakhpur, v.s. 2050). It's also in the mula Sanskrit edition by Thaneshcandra Upreti (325), which includes Sridharasvamnin's commentary (Dilli: Parimal Publications, 1986). I don't know what manuscripts these editors used and I haven't studied this carefully, but at a glance, it looks like Shridharasvamin says VAD creates adhikara (no surprise there), and that by neglecting it one can hardly follow the regulative principles or adopt the path of sravana-kirtana. The adhikari is one who embraces the "sruti-smrti-puranadi" principle and the sastric behavioral norms. I hope this helps. MDd

I just noticed that the final word of this edition is, "kArakaH" rather than the "kAraNam" of the Gitapresa version. I learned the latter first, in Prabhupada's books. There's little difference in meaning. This is a great verse, and knowing the context really helps. MDd
