It just occurred to me that if Shriila Baladeva's commentary on Laghu-

bhaagavataam.rita is translated, it would help us understand the

rationale of Shrila Ruupa Goswami's work. After all, Shriila Baladeva

was a very competent, philosophical and astute scholar of the shaastras.

This is very evident from his works where he reconciles several

contradictory points with good reasoning.

If my memory isn't wrong in this case, one of Shriila Baladeva's verses

on Shriila Ruupa Goswami in his ma^ngalaachara.na runs thus:

devaachaarya.h sat-kavitve paaraasharyas tattva-vaade mahaanta.h

sh.ri^ngaaraartha-vya~njane vyaasa-suunu.h sa shrii-ruupo paatu no bh.

ritya-vargaan

"In good poetry, he is (as good as) the teacher of the demigods. In the

exposition of truth [tattva-vaada], he is (as good as) the great son of

Paraashara. In expressing the purports of conjugal (rasa), he is (as

good as) the son of Vyaasa. May he, Shrii Ruupa, protect us, his

servants."
