Hare Krishna

Please accept my humble obesiances unto your lotus feet.

An essay clearly establishing the Supremacy of Srimad Bhagavatam is

posted at- http://www.gosai.com/chaitanya/indexh.html

Please do read it.

Also I personally felt that the following quotes can also be quoted

in our support for establishing puranas as part of the Vedas and

originating from the same source as the Vedas, namely the Supreme

Lord Himself.

"NARADA approached Sanatkumara and said, 'Teach me, sir!'

Sanatkumara said to him:

'Please tell me what you know; afterward I shall tell you what is

beyond.' [1]

Narada said:

ca rg-vedam bhagavo'dhyemi yajur-vedam sama-vedam atharvanam caturtham

itihasam puranam pancamam vedanam vedam

"O lord, I have studied the Rg Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, the

fourth Veda, known as the Atharva veda, and the fifth Veda, known as

the histories and Puranas......................."

(Chandogya Upanisad 7.1.2)

"SPEECH is better than a name. Speech makes us understand the

Rikveda, Yayurveda, Samaveda, and as the fourth the Atharvana, as the

fifth the Itihasa-purana, ........"

(Chandogya Upanisad 7.2.1)

"UNDERSTANDING (vignana) is better than reflection. Through

understanding we understand the Rikveda, the Yayurveda, the Samaveda,

and as the fourth the Atharvana, as the fifth the Itihasa-

purana,..........."

(Chandogya Upanisad 7.7.1)

"From this very Self, abiding within his Self, come forth all Pranas

(speech, etc.), all worlds, all Vedas, all gods and all beings; its

upanishad (revelation) is that it is 'the true of the true.' Now as

from a fire of greenwood, when kindled, clouds of smoke come forth by

themselves (though belonging to the fire), thus from that great Being

has been breathed forth all this which is the Rikveda, the Yayurveda,

the Samaveda, the Atharvangirasas (Atharva-veda), the Itihasa

(legendary stories), the Purana (accounts of the creation, etc.),

Vidya (ceremonial doctrines), the upanishads, the Slokas (verses

interspersed in the upanishads, etc.), the Sutras (compendious

statements), the Anuvyakhyanas (explanatory notes), the Vyakhyanas

(elucidations) - all these things are his. "

"....That (Indra) is the Agni (the Ahavaniya-fire) and its bricks are

the Rik, the Yagush, the Saman, the Atharvangirasas, the Itihasa, and

the Purana; and by them the fire has a head, two sides, a tail, and a

centre. This heaven (Ahavaniya-fire) is the third sacrificial pile

for Pragapati, who knows the Purusha. With the hands it makes a

present of the sacrificer to the Knower of the Self (Pragapati); then

the Knower of the Self, lifting him up, presented him to Brahman. In

him he becomes full of happiness and joy. "

(Maitrayana-Brahmaya 6.32-33)

Although they have quoted Brihad Aryanka Upanisad 2.4.10 but still we

could further strengthen our position by quoting-

Yagnavalkya talking to his wife Maitreyi

"As clouds of smoke proceed by themselves out of lighted fire kindled

with damp fuel, thus verily, Maitreyi, has been breathed forth from

this great Being what we have as Rikveda, Yayurveda, Samaveda,

Atharvangirasas, Itihasa, Purana Vidya, the upanishads, Slokas,

Sutras, Anuvyakhyanas, Vyakhyanas, what is sacrificed, what is poured

out, food, drink, this world and the other world, and all creatures.

>From him alone all these were breathed forth."

(Brihad Aryanka Upanisad 4.5.11)
