I think it is the modern followers who may say "the formless Brahman takes on a form". I doubt Ramanuja ever said that. The main place in the three foundational texts where the oneness of God and His forms is taught is in Vedanta 3.2.(around)11-21. Unfortunately(?), Ramanuja uses those sutras to explain an unrelated topic. Therefore, Ramanuja (as well as Nimbarka) is practically silent on the relationship of God and His form.
