Guest guest
The Hare Krishna maha-mantra is very popular here in Orissa. To this day one can find active kirtan groups in most villages. Cari prahara, asta-prahara, and sola prahara kirtan is common here, chanting at various festivals which goes for 12, 24 or 48 hours respectively. Even amongst the smartas, it is the tradition in Orissa that one must have initition into the maha-mantra before they can be married. Hence a common part of the Oriya marriage system is to initiate the bride and groom into the maha-mantra before performing the marriage ceremony. There is a nice song they sing about the maha-mantra: rama nama laddua / krishna nama ghi hari nama khanda ksira / ghori ghori pi "Rama's name is like a laddhu, Krishna's name is like ghee the name of Hari is like sweet rice, mixing them all together one should drink them."
