Guest guest
Dear Prabhu, Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada It is stated that SB contains 18,000 verses. I believe it completely. No doubt about it. But when I personally counted all the verses in SB it comes to about 14,024. The counting is verified and is still verifiable. how come the verses seem to be missing? Please clear my doubt? It has something to do with the way that the verses are counted. I remember reading this in Satyanarayana's translation of Tattva Sandarbha. Somewhere therein, he points out that the older and more traditional system of counting the shlokas results in the correct number - 18,000. I'm not sure why a different system has become more common. I don't recall the exact reference or the details about the counting system; i was unable to find them after a cursory glance of my Tattva Sandarbha translation. But it is definitely in there, either in one of SN's purports or one of the appendices. - Krishna

There is something about counting it as anustubh meters. Not sure what that is. GS

To be honest, I don't believe anyone has ever done it. Its hard enough to count the verses without messing up! Regardless, I'm not comfortable with this interpretation regarding verse numbers unless there is an exact statement from one of our acharyas. To me, 18,000 verses means there are actually 18,000 verses (or at least origionally there were). It doesn't mean the weighted average comes to 18,000, or some other formula.
