If the algebraic count of the verses in the other puranas are counted, and if their sum is also found to be not consistent with their corresponding number given in SB, then it should further support the reasoning that the difference is due to the manner in which the verses are counted. Or the entire Purana is no longer available in its original form, which is a very likely possibility.
