Guest guest
from Bhagavad-gita As It Is, Introduction: "Here the Lord clearly tells Arjuna that He is making him the first receiver of a new parampara (disciplic succession) because the old succession was broken. It was the Lord's wish, therefore, to establish another parampara in the same line of thought that was coming down from the sun-god to others, and it was His wish that His teaching be distributed anew by Arjuna. He wanted Arjuna to become the authority in understanding the Bhagavad-gita." I have always wondered about this. Srila Prabhupada says that Krishna wanted to restore the paramparaa, and so He spoke BG to Arjuna. But Arjuna did not initiate another paramparaa, at least not as far as I know. I am aware that, after Krishna's passing, he gave some spiritual instructions to the other Paandavas which culminated in all of them taking to the renounced order. But after that, there was no paramparaa to speak of. It was only later, with Madhva, Ramanuja, Chaitanya, etc that the paramparaas were restored. Why then, does Srila Prabupada seem to state that Arjuna was meant to inaugurate a whole new paramparaa? yours, - K

Arjuna, while playing the role, of a conditioned soul, enticed Lord Krsna to deliver this knowledge anew. Vyasa heard and recorded it and there was the new parampara. Parampara is not a list of names it is transmission of knowledge. Sri Madhva appeared in the 1100's AD. Wrote and presented his writings to Veda Vyasa. Vyasa approved and there was a revival of parampara. Hoping this helps, RGd Buy the perfect holiday gifts at Shopping.

But the point is, Arjuna did not "distribute the teachings anew." He didn't teach anyone. Nor did he start a paramparaa. Srila PRabhupada's comments seem to imply that he was meant to do that -- "it was His wish that His teaching be distributed anew by Arjuna. He wanted Arjuna to become the authority in understanding the Bhagavad-gita." - K
