Guest guest Posted February 24, 2002 Report Share Posted February 24, 2002 The process by which one pays obesiances to the Lord has been described in Hari Bhakti vilasa (8.162-163) dorbhyaM pAdbhyaM ca jAnubhyAm urasA SirasA dRsA manasA vacasA ceti pranAmo'STaNga irataH jAnubhyAm caiva bAhubhyAM SirasA vacasA dhiyA pancaNgakaH praNamaH syAt pujasu pravarav imau "The astanga pranama, or prostrated obesiances, is performed with the following eight parts of the body: the arms, legs, knees, chest, head as well as eyes, mind and speech. One should perform the panchanga pranama, or the five part obesiance with the knees, arms, head, words and intelligence. Thus their are two kinds of obseiances which are performed in the course of ones puja". Sanatana Goswami in his commentary explains, "Obesiances are perfomed with eyes slightly closed, the hands touching the lords feet, with head lowered and mind meditating on paying obesiances to the lord.
