Worship of Lord Narasimha?

Dear devotees,

I have heard it said that one should not worship a picture or Deity

of Lord Narasimha in the home.

The person who told me this rationalized it by saying that the Deity

room should be very peaceful, which is impossible to achieve

wherever Lord Narasimha's anger was present.

Certainly there seems to be some agreement with this sentiment in

South Indian temples, because wherever I have visited a Narasimha

temple, it was always the case that the Deity was kept in the

innermost recess of a cave in order to "cool His anger."

I would like to know, is there any precedent for discouraging

Narasimha worship in the home, be it shaastra, Srila Prabhupada's

instructions, instructions of any other aachaaryas, or tradition? If

you are aware of specific evidence, please include that as well.

Thanks in advance,

I have heard that worship of Lord Nrsimha can be

unsafe-- certainly in His ugra-form -- if He is not

cared for or feels neglected. This is why Ugra

Nrsimha pujaris must care only for Him, make a life

commitment to Him, and fulfill many other

requirements-- at least this is the system in ISKCON's

Mayapur temple.

Also (and you needn't post this, Prabhu, but just for

your personal knowledge) in New Vrindavan, in, I

believe, 1985, just a few months before the situation

there reached a head, large Prahlada-Nrsimha Deities

were installed. I believe Lord Nrsimha was

responsible for the exposure and subsequent punishment

of the wrongdoers there, in His typical dramatic

fashion.

But I have worshipped Sri-Sri Prahlada-Nrsimha in my

home for over 10 years. I have no other Deities but

Them. If personal experience can be counted among

other proofs, I have never ever had any disturbances

that might be caused by Lord Nrsimha. He has always

been a joy to care for and live with. My service is

anything but top-notch, but He has always been very

tolerant and forgiving, and extremely merciful to me

and my family. Once a young man came to our house and

began looking in the windows (he didn't see me, but I

saw him) after about five minutes, which were very

tense for me, he went away. Later I found out that he

broke into a neighbor's house. I attribute his

departure to the presence of Lord Nrsimhadeva

(actually, I would only be afraid of Lord Nrsimha

Himself deciding to leave and arranging to be stolen.

All other valuables in my home can *be* stolen, as

long as no one takes Him!) But, Prabhu, there is my

testimonial in favor of Nrsimha worship in the home.

your servant,

Maharani dasi
