Guest guest
Hare Krsna, dear devotees. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I have a question: is an individual soul has an eternal connection with Sri Guru (even before one got initiated)? I mean, when they say, "You must find who your Gurudev is", do they mean that I already have a Gurudev, but I haven't found him yet? It's said "...janme janme prabhu sei..." Does it mean that one particular person is one's Guru for all lives? -- Your servant, Dennis. dennis_s

It is implicit that one's guru is the same person eternally; everyone's rasa is eternal, and it is the guru who trains one in raga bhakti. To imply otherwise definitely has the psychological effect of inhibiting full attachment and devotion to the guru, at least for most people. However, it is equally important to keep in mind that the guru is Krsna Himself--though he comes in the form of His best devotee, who isn't Krsna. There may be no resolving this in terms of mundane logic, but there isn't even any question in terms of practice: simply treat the bonafide guru as your eternal master, and eternally treat him like Krsna. One way or another, and as hinted throughout the Gita, Krsna ceaselessly arranges that those who want guidance will get it. This is why it is important for His devotees to extend the Lord's Divine grace worldwide, and why Lord Caitanya has ordered everyone to eventually qualify as a bonafide guru to deliver others. In fact, ultimately Krsna has no other interest but pleasing His devotees, so if anyone seeks a guru, Krsna unfailingly reciprocates, exactly in proportion to the degree and quality of one's spiritual hankering. As I understand it, the living soul travels throughout the creationup and down (brahmanda bhramite) until by good fortune one gets the darshan of Sri Guru. By getting oneself initiated on the bhakti-marga by such a guru, the eternal connection with Sri Guru is established. This connection is indeed eternal. If by ill-luck one falls down from the spiritual path, Sri Guru will again come to deliver him providing that Sri Guru has not rejected such a disciple. I have read as much in Srila Prabhupada's writings, though I am unable at this time to provide a reference, my apologies.
