Dear Neha

please look under the category of medhya rasayana, or mental

rejuvenatives, intellect promoters

including herbs such as Brahmi, Mandukaparni, Jyotishmati, Vacha,

Kushta, Ashvagandha, Bhringaraja, Amalaki, Shankapushpi, Kushmanda

as far as mental retardation specifically I've only seen one study for

Mandukaparni (Centella asiatica) which has demonstrated benefit in

trials:

"In a study upon the effects of Centella asiatica on

mentally-challenged children, half were given 500 mg tablets of dried

Centella asiatica (whole plant), and half placebo. Intelligence

quotient tests were conducted at the outset of the study, and again

after three months. Results indicated that children who took the

Centella tablet showed significant improvements in co-operation,

memory, concentration, attention, vocabulary and social adjustment

(Appa Rao 1973)."

other studies on the other plants are mostly experimental animal studies

but I use them with success, along with others such as Reishi

(Ganoderma spp), Milky Oats (Avena sativa), Skullcap (Scutellaria

lateriflora) etc...

esp. important is increasing protein content in diet and decreasing

refined CHOs which cause a rebound hypoglycemia that provokes

alterations in behaviour, concentration and aptitude

other things include a good vitamin-mineral complex, B complex

specifically, and omega 3 fatty acids (derived from fish oil)

nasya with brahmi, vacha ghritam, abhyanga etc.
