Guest guest
Dear Jay and Bonnie The indigestion and flatulence, as well as lack of hunger is due to Mandagni, and wrong eating habits. Instead of two meals per day, spread your input to smaller quantities at say 4-5 hour intervals. In case you do not have acid reflux problem, (Hyperacidity) you may try following for increasing hunger (Agni). Ayurveda has number of formulations for increasing hunger and digestive juice flow also. If digestion is slowed down due to weak liver, following remedies may not help. If you find that bloating or flatulence increases after fats, then liver function is weak. If you notice bloating or flatulence after you eat beans, then following may help. Beans and pulses require some sour spice (Lemon juice for instance) to increase saliva as digestive aid. In india, we add tamarind or similar spice to all pulses. Eating onion with pulses is also recommended. Amongst following five home remedies, choose any one which is most convenient. 1. Cut green ginger into thin slices, sprinkle a pinch of rock salt/common salt and eat about 10 min. before meal. Will cure indigestion. And you will feel hungry. OR 2. Flatulation is cured by sipping mixture of mint juice and rock salt. OR 3. Drinking the mixture of 1/2 tsp bishop weed seed, a pinch of rock salt/common salt in lemon juice. OR 4. Mix 1 tsp green ginger juice and 2 tsp honey in a glass of warm water and drink 10 mins. before food. OR 5. If you don't feel hungry at all, then by eating 1/2 tsp bishop weed seed twice a day after chewing it properly will make you feel hungry. Many more remedies exist for increasing hunger and reducing indigestion by making increase in digestive juices. Only five have been given here for simplicity. Aurveda has number of formulations to increase Agni and also digestive juices. However, due to difficulties in obtaining those in western countries, I have suggested home remedies. For indigestion, fasting on orange juice/vegetable soups for a few days and gradual transition to semi-solid and solid food will always help. Body gets necessary rest to regenerate the liver. The liver is a wonderful organ. Given rest, it recuperates itself. One requires strong and unclogged liver to digest fats, ghee, certain pulses. For non-vegetarian food, liver requires further strength. If one is prepared to add enzymes, vitamins through other means, he can make food more digestible by over-cooking.
