Dear Kumar,

I had cold sores also. I ate more pitta pacifying food. Especially cut down on

citrus and anything in the nightshade family. The pitta pacifying tastes are

salt, acid and pungent.

yikes! sour and pungent increase pitta!

some kinds of salt reduce pitta, e.g. saindhava, but salt can also

aggravate pitta

cold sores are related to a variety of factors, including diet, nervous

function, and immunity; even excess sunlight can cause eruption in some

people

specifically, cold sores can be related to an excess of

arginine-containing foods in the diet (e.g. peanuts, chocolate, cereals

and grains) vs. lysine ratio (e.g. meat, eggs, etc.) - i often see

recurrent cold sores in vegetarians for this reason, and note that they

decrease in frequency and even disappear with this shift in diet

please note that cold sores (occurring on the lip and about the mouth)

are not the same as canker sores (apthous ulcers, occurring in the

mouth)

for cold sores, treatment is supportive and preventative - once you

have the herpes virus it permanently lives in your spinal cord,

occasionally "blossoming" out to replicate itself when conditions are

right

for topical treatment try essential oils of lemon balm and/or

sandalwood mixed with a base of zinc oxide cream - these oils have

potent antiviral activities; to dry out the vesicles try something like

alum

use antiviral remedies internally like guduchi, bhunimba, st. john's

wort and echinacea

and vitamins A, C, E and zinc to heal up the skin

otherwise correct the arginine:lysine ratios in your diet, get plenty

of sleep, destress, and use immune-supportive remedies, including a

good b-vitamin, amalaki, ashvagandha, astragalus etc.

Dear Doctor,

I am 22 years old. I have been regularly reading your Digest and the ayurvedic

medicine you have been prescribing for different problems.

I have been suffering from cold sore past couple of years. I get the blisters

around my lip areas and after 3 to 4 days after using allopathic cream they dry

out and fall. But off late, for past 6 to 8 months I am getting the attack of

cold sores every other month.

Can you prescribe some ayurvedic medicine in your Digest, which can kill this

problem from the root and will not have any side effects on me?

I will be thankful to you for helping me solve this problem keeping me away from

this embarrassment.

Thank you once again
