Guest guest
I write this in encouragement to all young vegetarians who would like to establish themselves in a higher type of life – a divine life – a Vedic life. Yesterday - I discussed the subject of vegetarianism as it applies to modern people with my Guru and he wanted me to point out a few of his thoughts on the subject. All of these things he has told before and are the foundation of his spiritual perspective. 1 – He says that we must remember that human beings in the main part are omnivores. Vast majority eats a mixture of plant and animal foods. Only a small minority lives on meat or plant food alone. Yet throughout the centuries there have been a few who continue on their animal foods mainly. Yet it is not believed possible for human beings or any other species to thrive on cooked animal foods alone. Any Zoo or vetenarian will tell that one can not maintain carnivorous animals on cooked food alone – such creatures must eat raw foods and also be supplemented with isolated nutrients and plant products to thrive. Then there are those other small percentages of people who can live and thrive on plant foods alone. My Father who was a staunch Devotee of H.H. Sivananda Saraswati (Divine Life Society) and Gandhiji - being a Vaidya and Yoga practioner and life long student of natural science has not taken any animal foods since before my birth. A small percentage of people fit into these two extremes – the majority of us do well on a mixed diet. 2 – Vegetarianism as a philosophical viewpoint was not developed helter skelter. It is not an intellectual achievement it is a vision of the Rishi's. It is a spiritual achievement as well as a physical achievement. It is not sentimentality or emotionalism it is a world view. An understanding of the potential of human beings to move to a higher plane of civilization. A non-violent, non exploitive life. His belief is that the reason why we do not eat other creatures is because we shun a violent explotive life. Once Maharishi Mahesh Yogi when asked why we are vegetarians answered "Because it is the civilized way to live". 3 – Vegetarianism is a system of life that builds moral power and increases Shakti in its adherents. It is a life of compassion and empathy. 4 – It is true that scripture mentions the eating of meat – millions of people now and in Vedic times are eating flesh. This has nothing to do with the further realization of Saints and Sadhu's in modern times. We are an evolving species and have a long way to go before a true Vedic culture arises in the world. One meaning of Kali Yug is in this time we are pre civilized – trying to establish ourselves in a true human state. A civilized creature that lives according to a higher vision than the law of the jungle. 5 – Since we are omnivores it is possible to move toward a non flesh diet – at least it is possible for most. Few will be left in the old model of nourishment. What is food and what is not food? Of those few remaining true carnivores it is not the objective of vegetarians to tell them that they can not follow along that flesh eating path. Bhagwan has made them to be like that. 6 – Vegetarians need not suffer any insecurity about their vegetarian culture. They should rejoice in it and commit themselves to perfecting it. Establish it on a scientific basis while the meateaters establish themselves in their path. Actually all contradictions in this subject have long been resolved by Enlightened Masters. Many times when I try to imagine the implications that meateaters are proposing it becomes overwhelming in its implications. Many meateaters would like to increase the number of meateaters and the amount of meat we eat. Can one truly imagine the horror of such a thing. We would have to have huge animal factories to house and raise those billions of animals that would be needed for our nourishment. Our species and our culture would be founded on a river of the blood of those innocent creatures. This is not the foundation of a Vedic culture. No Rishi would advocate such a culture. The overcoming of our war like, explotive, and murderous nature is the real meaning of civilization because no society can possibly stand on such a premise as war, exploitation, and slaughter. Such a civilization is contrary to the very concept of evolution. It is an attempt to integrate our ancient Paleolithic nature into a modern and future model of human life. This attempt has already failed because millions refuse to go that way regardless of any scientific evidence - which of course does not exist – as omnivore nature is firmly established in human nature. We are not trying to devolve back to our carnivore roots – we are trying to evolve toward the higher fields of Brindavan – where we will live a life based on peace and joy with all love and empathy toward all creatures – with no thought of slaughtering them for our personal benefit. A perfection that is not based on gross instincts. Below is my interperation of a teaching given by H.H.Chitanand Swami (Divine Life Society). This is a possible framework for a Manifesto of vegetarianism. In respect, love, and affirmation of the realization of the Great visionaries - I take a vow to Bhagwan – I will not harm any creature for my own health and benefit – I will eat the roots on the roadside before taking the life of other animals for my nourishment or any other purpose. I take it as self evident that every creature has as much right to live their life in peace and non abuse as I do – so there is not now or ever any reason or justification for taking their life. Even if I can not have my health even if I can not realize my human potential even if I can not know God – I vow I will not enter into slaughter for my own benefit. I do not fear such eventualities because millions live their lives now and in the past without ever killing anyone. My Father and my Guru have realized the highest levels of human achievement intellectually, physically, and spiritually – without killing anyone. Under the Divine grace of their inspiration - I renounce war – I renounce abuse of others – I renounce – murder. I affirm Ahimsa as not only the natural order – it is also the greatest blessing we will ever achieve – to live a life of peace and compassion based on Vedic Ideals. I also commit myself to the health and well being of the planet and all sentient beings. I will live my life to the best of my ability according to the highest promise of scripture - affirming in my own life as God gives me the ability – the teachings of Gita – Yoga – Ayurveda. May the young realizing these truths in their own lives work toward a true Vedic culture. Kill no creature whatever benefit you think you might achieve. Warmongers, murderers, oppresors always have reasons for doing what they do – this in no way makes it correct. Be brave and work hard surely Bhagwan will elevate you in the process. Guest guest
this is easily understood in one word - poverty. The health statistics for middle class Indians are almost identical to the statistics of middle class people throughout the world. Those who know how the poor people of all countries are forced to live in squalor and eat a diet that reflects that status - are disease producing in and of themselves. As all observers of Indian social issues know - when people move up in society their health condition improves and then may they develop all of the modern excess diseases of modern people in every country - if they are not careful. These issues have nothing to do with veg or non-veg. The same short life statistics apply to the poor meateaters of Africa - South America - Mexico - Phillipines - London - LA - Delhi - Mumbai - etc.. Poor people throughout the world live under malnutrition and extreme stress - it is not suprising that such people will not thrive and will die young. One can never expect good health in people who do not live a healthy life. Rich or poor - health statistics of the whole world demonstrate this beyond any doubt.
