Guest guest
Is fruit and yoghurt an incompatible mix from an Ayurvedic standpoint? I recall reading by Vasant Lad that fruit and yoghurt decreases the digestive fire. -yogaman

Guest guest
Dr Patwardhan-ji, Thanks for the info. Though it is said so in Ayurveda, I find using yoghurt+fruit is really re-vitalizing. Could it be that it is certain fruits alone that are proscribed to be eaten with yoghurt (eg banana) and not all fruits. Also another question- Dr Lad is also unusally harsh on the humble tomato- he says that it is harmful for all doshas. But I find this not to be the case- eating tomatoes or drinking fresh tomato juice is really energizing. So is tomato a food to be avoided as per Ayurveda?? Thanks and regards -yogaman ayurveda, manish patwardhan <drmspatwardhan> wrote: > yes! > > childofdevi <childofdevi> wrote:Is fruit and yoghurt an incompatible mix from an Ayurvedic standpoint? > > I recall reading by Vasant Lad that fruit and yoghurt decreases the > digestive fire. > > -yogaman
Guest guest
Those with strong agni living in warm climate are not particuarly bothered by cold substances. But those who are naturally cold through prakruti or who have vata or kapha disease often have low agni and are better off not taking cold foods. My wife example has good agni and loves cooked apples with fresh yogurt (not refrigerated) - no problems but if she takes the apples raw then this will reduce agni and make some stomach heaviness and gas. As far as tomatoes are concerned - this is a complicated issue because tomatoes are a food that has potential for disturbing a large percentage of people. Many modern researchers call tomatoes as a 'universal allergin'. This is because tomatoes along with many other foods (strawberries as an example) have lectins which many people react too - some severely. Tomatoes are only used by many people in modern times as it was not an available food in most places of the worldin the past. All cultures who eat tomatoes traditionaly have concepts about how to properly use them - most of those cultures see tomatoes as potentialy harmful - some even see tomatoes as being poisonous. Modern researchers believe that tomatoes are best used cooked and not raw. In Gita the Lord recommends against eating of sour foods. In the case of tomatoes if properly ripened on the vine in good sunlight they will have a sweet taste and less sour - this type of tomato is less harmful if properly prepared. Sour tomatoes are definitely harmful to majority. In such matters each person must discover for themselves if these 'new' foods suit one. Try to use common sense in food selection as many varieties of foods are not properly grown or prepared in todays world - therefore many laws of food combination must be likewise adjusted to these foods. Many good foods can become harmful if not prepared properly - example is sour tomatoes which are fried in oil with chilis then eaten with potaotes and or rice can not possibly digest properly and will create acid conditions. One friend in Bombay believes that tomato curries are at the heart of many disease processes such as arthritis. Regardless of that question - I notice that many friends who eat many sour foods must take pitta reducing agents after meals (pravel moti - gudduchi - etc.) ayurveda, "childofdevi" <childofdevi> wrote: > Dr Patwardhan-ji, > > Thanks for the info.
