Dear Rick Your post on sciatica has given this author motivation to write about a tough routine which can get rid off not only sciatica but a variety of arthritis and rheumatism problems. Author had thought of writing this after the message No. 2073 in June itself, but somehow it slipped the mind. In Inida, author has seen elderlies in eighty- plus age, without any joint problems whatsoever. A decade ago, author was travelling with a Jain monk in Rajastan, India. Jain monks do not use cars. Nor they eat after sunset. They travel on foot. Overnight halt in a village became essential. Person who supplied food to members like us, was suffering from severe sciatica pain and limp. Five years old ailment. The monk noticed it and noted which were most sore spots. Villagers can not spend hefty sums on medicines/hospitals. When the host requested, monk told him a month long programme to get rid of sciatica completely. Author met the host after approximately two months while passing through the village and found him walking straight, erect, with no limp. It was seen that pain and stiffness both had vanished. The news had spread to neighbouring villages and several were approaching him for information. He asked me to convey his grattitude to monk. So far only one patient of author could carry out the programme fully for one month and obtain total success. Author thinks that only determination and complete faith may yield results. Here is the complete four week schedule. The schedule is for four weeks. For all four weeks, repeat daily the recommendations of part A. Eat only recommended food/medicine for each week as suggested in part B. Part A ( 28 days) i. No salt for next four weeks; start salt afterwards only gradually. ii. Daily morning, take ½ tsp ginger powder, 2 cups water, 21 leaves of Parijata tree and boil on slow heat till 1 cup water remains. Add 1-6 tsp (5-30 ml) castor oil, when warm, stirr well till luke warm and drink on empty stomach. Castor oil quantity is only 1 tsp in the beginning, gradually increase to 6 tsp by 28th day. iii. Repeat above drink without Parijata leaves and (1 cup water+1cup milk) instead of two cups water at bed time. Part B In this case, week-by-week schedule is given running simultaneously with part-A. First week: Repeat morning drink (without parijatak leaves and castor oil 3-4) times a day; no other food/drink. Drink as much water as necessary, but always boil to 50% and drink warm. You may notice that the pain/stiffness level is almost half by end of first week. Second week: Take Grren gram water 3-4 times a day. No other food/drink. To prepare green gram water, cook green gram with more water (1:3 by volume) and after cooked, grink in grinder. Strain the mixture with coarse sieve. Drink the liquid. Drink as much water as necessary, but always boil to 50% and drink warm. Third week. Take green gram cooked 3-4 times a day. Now cooking is wilth less water (1:2 by volume). No other food/drink. You may add a little lime juice for taste, if required. Drink as much water as necessary, but always boil to 50% and drink warm. You may noticew that stiffness of joints has almost reduced now. Fourth Week. Take fresh juicy fruits 3-4 times a day. Eat fruits directly, after chewing them properly. Drink as much water as necessary, but always boil to 50% and drink warm. Congratulations. You have completed 28 days `fast recovery' programme. To retain the success, one more week of discipline is needed: Fifth week: Adopt to normal meals very gradually over next one week. Thus eat one chapati every day upto your normal requirement. Avoid hot, spicy, oily, fermented, bakery hence forth and enjoy early morning walk. You may continue Parijata drink with 11 leaves instead of 21. You may continue bedtime milk drink with reduced castor oil as well as fruits everyday. No need to increase salt. Switch to sea salt in cooking. Drink as much water as necessary, but always boil to 50% and drink warm. Comments by author: During initial two weeks, visit to toilet may be required 3-4 time a day, and sticky motions will result. It is necessary to stay home for 4 weeks, as motions may occur at unpredictable time and some of them may not allow adequate time to visit toilet. Ama is eliminated in this manner. Hence all Aamvata related problems get cured. The procedure already contains equivalence of PanchKarma. If there is burning sensation during motion, ½ tsp of Giloy powder may be added to drink, to take care of Pitta vitiation. It may appear that salt is not taken for four weeks. However, salt in natural food (Green gram) and fruits is adequate for us. Do animals eat salt? Sleep may be disturbed. No worry. By end of 5th week, normal calm sleep will return. For those who do not have access to Parijata tree, tablets made from Parijata leaves extract are available, but efficacy is reduced. This is true with all ayurvedic medicines. If you can get fresh herb, maximum benefit. Do not dilute the recommendations due to lack of time, non- availability of herbs etc. If you do so, full benefits may not be received. Latin names of herbs like Parijata, Giloy are available though search engines or on allayurveda.com Dr Bhate
