Hi

I have been diagnosed with kidney stones. I suffer

from lower back pain( on right side), pain around the

waist.

I consulted a ayurveda doctor and he recommended me

Brihatyadi kashayam, gokshura choornam and

chandraprabha vati. I have started taking these

medicines since last week.

I would like to know about the vegetables to be

avoided for kidney stones. Each one gives me a

different answer. I have been asked to avoid potatoes,

spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, brinjal, milk, curd and

fruits. Being a vegetarian, I'm confused what else is

left for me to eat ..

Can the vaidyas please suggest me what food I can take

and what I should avoid.

One of my friends suggested, I drink radish juice. I

drank it just once - its too hot and spicy to drink.

IS there any other home remedies I can try.?

Kindly help me with a diet.

Thanks

Sarika

to get specific with the diet, it depends on what kind of stone you

have - has this been suggested? did you do a urine pH test?

given that you are a vegetarian, i would probably rule out urate

stones, which are usually from excess meat consumption (unless you eat

lots of beans and drink lots of coffee, which are also rich in purines)

oxalate stones would only be an issue if you regularly consume foods

high in oxalates (e.g. rhubarb, spinach, cocoa, pepper, tea)

struvite stones are related to an infection with organisms that

metabolize urea - but you would have a very high urine pH

more likely than not you have calcium stones, which account for the

vast majority of cases, and unfortunately, are the most difficult to

pinpoint as to the cause, from a medical perspective

as far as dietary changes go, this is what i usually recommend:

•increase soluble and insoluble fibers in your diet, e.g. leafy green

vegetables and whole grains (e.g. rice, oats)

•eliminate sugar

•reduce salt, alcohol, tea, coffee and dairy consumption

•reduce oxalate-containing foods (e.g. rhubarb, black tea, spinach,

parsley)

•increase total water intake

•increase magnesium-containing foods (e.g. barley, sesame, coconut,

avocado)

i'm not sure why cauliflower and cabbage were taken off your list -

they aren't particularly high in oxalates

anyway, leafy greens (except spinach and parsley) are generally good

for stones, especially if eaten with some kind of fat (e.g. ghee,

sesame oil) to make the vitamin K more bioavailable - vitamin K

inhibits calcium oxalate formation

Hi Todd

Thanks for the diet information. I havn't done the

urine PH test. I think I will go and take that test

soon.

I forgot to mention in last email, I have also been

told to avoid tomaotes. Is there a problem with me

taking tomatoes?

Thank you very much

Sarika
