Guest guest
Towards fertility and successful pregnancy The best beauty of a woman is exhibited when she is pregnant. A special unusual glow, beauty, serenity is seen on her face. This glow is the indicator of health of baby inside her body. The subject matter of this post is the care to be taken by mother and other family members, the behavioural approach of other family members to her, in order that baby grows healthy and does not suffer from Vikruti, Some posts on this subject have already appeared earlier in group, but some more points are covered here from ayurvedic angle. The present time period is Vasant rutu in India. . The trees bear fresh new leaves, flowers and fruits. The birds keep singing throughout the day. There is a temperate climate, highly desirable warmth after cold dry winter. Ideal time for growth of new species. Hence, many couples are blessed with pregnancy during February middle to April middle. Nature helps the hormone system of all animals to maximum extent in these two months. Those who have spent more than a year without the blessing of pregnancy start getting worried. The question of the infertility and the ayurvedic perspective can be dealt with in a separate article. The objective of this article is to give out simple lifestyle and food recommendation for pregnant women. The first and most important objective of all programme is to avoid the chances of abortion at all costs. The links between medical termination of pregnancy or abortion and risk factors of breast cancer are being discovered by modern science recently. Ayurvedic guru's have suggested several precautions to minimize the risk of abortion. If the uterus has vitiated doshas, then it expels the foetus, termed Garbhastrava, Grabhpat. Such uterus does not cause proper upbringing of foetus and sometimes baby may die soon after birth. Amongst various vitiation of doshas, the Vata is the predominant. By its dynamic and randomness nature, it expels the foetus. On the other hand, excess pitta can cause polyps, ulceration (loss of mucous lining) hyperacidity and can be responsible for loss of pregnancy. Sometimes contagious diseases do not allow the embryo to be stable in uterus. It is not only uterus alone responsible. The embryo forms by union of ovum and sperm. But if Veerya is corrupted by doshas such as Vata pitta, it can not cause conception. And in exceptional circumstances, if conception occurs, the embryo does not stay long in uterus. Fluidic abortive discharge before twelve weeks is termed Garbhastrava in ayurveda. Thus a vikrut (doshit) shukra dhatu (veerya) also can be responsible for loss of pregnancy. While treating for infertility or frequent abortions, one must assess the doshas of Veerya. Modern medical tests address issues such as population density, motility or departure from normality, etc but the doshas of veerya as described in ayurveda are difficult to test by modern medicine. In order to reduce the vitiation of shukra dhatu, one must use shukra shodhak rasayanas and formulations. If there are no structural malformation in uterus or other growths such as polyps, fibroids, etc, ayurvedic treatment can tackle the issue of frequent abortions. One of the well known medicine for preventing the loss of pregnancy is Phal Ghrutam, especially when abortions are caused by excess pitta or heat in the blood (ushma). This is made from several cooling and balya herbs. They help in strengthening the ligaments which hold the uterus in place, supporting the weight of the foetus. Frequently a pregnant lady has to take bed rest if uterus starts descending from weakness of ligaments. Phal ghrutam strengthens the uterus walls also. This should be taken a teaspoon in warm milk twice a day. Depending on the patient dose up to two tsp is also common. When shukra dhatu is suffering from dosha vitiation, the sperms can not last long after ejaculation. Phal ghrutam increases their population and makes them strong. Garbhpal Ras is a ras shastra medicine made from various bhasmas. As the name implies, it looks after the foetus fully. Buidls up the foetus, causes nutritive action for the foetus. Can be taken from 1 to 9 months of the pregnancy. Better to take along with Phal Ghrutam, 1-2 tablets depending on the patient, twice a day. Food: Cabbage, Cauli-flower, all long green vegetables (Indian names: Tondali, Turai, Louki, Parwal, Palak, Govari) can be used alternately. Keep balance, rather than eating same vegetable all the time. Reduce brinjal, suran (yam), papaya, shevga, celery, garlic, onion, chilli, ginger, pepper, ajwain, hing (asfoetida), mustard, bajara, jaggery. Those who have previous history of abortion better avoid these. Those suffering from gas, bloating, constipation reduce or better avoid peas and other `heavy to digest' cereals, potato. Green gram cooked is easy to digest and will give protein supply. Tur dhal can be taken with dilution and sauting by ghee rather than oil. If there is no problem of gas, constipation, cereals can be made into soups and taken in moderate quantity. Black grapes, amalaki, banana, ripe mango are sweet fruits, very beneficial. Dates, cashewnuts, apricot, etc dry fruits are beneficial. Butter, ghee, milk, shrikhand, honey, fennel seeds, sweets made from jaggery rather than white sugar can also be taken in small quantity. Rice, pulao, Khichri, Murmure, Chapati, Bhakari, Paratha, Gujarati thepla are the items made from wheat and rice and are beneficial. Items such as bakery bread, bun, sandwich, pizza, handva, dhokla, khaman, idli, dosa, tomato, tamarind, curd, kadhi they increase the swellings and acidity. If such problems do not exist, you can take in small quantity. If you are allergic, do not take even if they are tasty. As discussed in recent post on asthma, do not eat unless previous food is digested properly and you are feeling hungry. Frequent eating will cause acidity/gas. Indian women try to carry out fasts, vratas during pregnancy. It is not proper to do such things. Why do you want to please some imaginary god when real god is kicking inside womb? Do not eat left overs. Similarly frozen, deep-frozen food forbidden. Avoid mutton, chicken, eggs, alcohol, smoking, tobacco, betel nut, pan-masala. Tea-coffee, cocoa, cold drinks, ice-creams can be taken in small quantity. Lifestyle: Do not over exert. Lifting heavy bucket of water or other items should be avoided. Do not undertake travel unless absolutely necessary. Avoid going out in darkness.. Do not sleep during day or remain awake during night. Do not undertake blood donation. Avoid enemas, medicines causing vomits/loose motions. They increase the chances of abortion. But they are not good ways to carry out intentional abortion also. Do not look into deep well or from a skyscraper building. Do not sleep on back. Keep dress loose. Do not sit on hard bench or platform. While sitting there should be no pressure on belly. Put high heel chappals or shoes aside. Use thin heel ones only. High heel ones give rise to spinal problems, back ache etc. Keep the environment in house (tempers) cool and lively. The wishes and whims of mother are in reality those of the womb. The way lord Krishna was naughty, the baby inside the womb may also be demanding something unusual. Bow to the wishes of the baby. Avoid fear, depression, short temper. Very tender cells of baby's mind become excited.
