Guest guest
Dear learned people, My husband is suffering from real bad cough as a after effect of pollen allergies. He is taking anti-histamines (Allegra, zyrtec, tylenol) but nothing seems to work. Is there any good ayurveda medicine that works for such cases?? The doctor insists the cough is due to allergies and not any strep or throat infections. Please help!!! Regards, Vani

Guest guest
Vani Allegra, zyrtec, tylenol offer very little help in chronic allergies acc. to many patients treated by this author. Allergies arising from long term allopathic treatments for T.B., Typhoid, etc need to be finally tackled by ayuveda or homeopathy. The remedies suggested to you so far by group members are all proven ones, being harmless at the same time. For instance, Mr Jagannath Chatterjee suggests Tulsi, Ginger, Vasaka mixture. In addition, Yeshtimadhu, Ardusi, are well known plants of second choice which find places in `Contents' list of many asthma medicines in India. In case these powders or fresh leaves are difficult to obtain and you can get Sitopaladi Churna as suggested by Kinnar Shah, it is also a good remedy, to be taken in honey, three times a day. In case you are unable to obtain these: Author suggests an immediate measure first. The coughing as a result of allergies is that natural reaction of the body to throw away the allergens. Allergens are sticking to sticky ama. Due to this, body is unable to absorb oxygen from inhaled air. Or exchange corbon dioxide. One way to remove this ama is Camphor powder inhaling. Powder camphor on a piece of paper and hold it near nose. Inhale deeply for 10-20 minutes. This melts phlegm sticking to air passages viscous all the way to lungs and phlegm comes out slowly. Along with phlegm, camphor particles will also come out. Air passages get cleaned and enlarged slightly. Let phlegm come out and coughing will reduce as more oxygen is received by body. You can do this two or three times a day, according to intensity of cough attacks and patients capacity to withstand. Coughing bouts weaken rib cage and lung muscles. Inhaling steam coming from water slowly boiling, in which camphor is dissolved, may also help, provided patient withstands steam. Another long term measure which will reduce allergic reaction, without doing any harm is: Take Hing (Asfoetida) powder and camphor powder in equal proportion, pound them together and mix in little honey to make a thick viscous putty. Make small tablets of the size equivalent to green gram grain and let them dry in shade. Take these tablets one or two, every four hours, in a little fresh ginger juice. This reduces breathing troubles in asthma, coughing, lung congestion and also tightness in chest/heart (since cardiac blood supply is increased). Camphor causes blood circulation wherever it reaches in body. Author keeps these tablets always ready with him whenever he visits a heart patient with short breath complaint. This is our ayurvedic Sorbitrate. One caution: Hing (asfoetida) must be pure and good quality. Secondly, be cautious if you are a cardiac patient suffering from angina pectoris. Let your doctor decide what to do. A supportive diet is carrot juice, carrot and spinach juice, black berry juice. Obtain consent of your present health provider(if he is ayurvdic side) before accepting any of net recommendation. All the plants recommended herein contain a pollutants absorbed from polluted environment created by all of us. Wishing good recovery to your husband.
