Dear Dr. Bhate, Namaskar. It is not that the ayurveds were not aware of germs. Acharyas referred to them as "krimi", living organisms present in our body. However they emphasised that; 1. Harmful krimi cannot attack the vitality without a base having been formed for it to become active. Like flies usually form and gather around only rotten garbage, or maggots can occur only after the person is dead. Thus krimi is a byproduct of disease but not its cause. The cause is always an imbalance in prana. The krimi come to eat waste matter. If germs are harmful then vultures and other scavengers are also harmful. 2. Not all krimi are harmful. The majority are beneficial to the body and are essential to maintain life. Hence they advised the taking of curd (buttermilk) etc., or ammonia as you said in your post on urine therapy. Today science is also coming around to accept these views as they realise that the presence of the bacteria may not trigger the disease unless the vitality is weak. We all know that the HIV virus is dormant in many people and active in a few. Similiarly germs are present everywhere but all people are not equally affected. Science is also now encouraging the use of probiotics to counter the horrible after effects of antibiotics. One day they will come around to realise that antibiotics may not have been necessary in the first place. Regards, Jagannath.
