Has anyone ever heard or experienced coffee making you sleepy? I had a high

protein, low carb breakfast and now feel like I am ready to crash. I will

eliminate the carbs tomorrow and see if I feel better, but I am beginning to

wonder if it could be the coffee that makes me sleepy. Most drugs make me

sleepy. Wine makes me very sleepy. Is there something in coffee that could make

some people sleepy? I only had 1/4 piece of whole wheat toast for breakfast.

Thanks for your consideration!

Warmest regards,

Debra

Debra,

coffee makes me sleepy as well. I used to work night shifts and drank a lot

of coffee or took caffeeine pills to help stay awake. This was years ago and i

remember that I got extremely sleepy on coffee. this still happens. As far as

I know it has to do with coffee exhausting your adrenals, so you may get a kick

when you first drink coffee but rather then giving real energy it "fakes" and

robbs your essence causing fatigue.

I have had experiences with wheat making me sleepy and with various

drugs that are supposed to make me sleepy making me stay awake, so I

would say it is possible. Consider the amount of fat in the breakfast;

too much fat is good for a snooze.

Claudia, I think, I will try to go without tomorrow and see if I get sleepy.

its probably hypoglycemia

coffee has an adrenergic activity, and raises blood sugar while

decreasing insulin-sensitivity

it may give you more energy initially, but this can be followed by a

dramatic lowering of blood sugar due to a compensatory secretion of

insulin - this can cause the sleepiness, as well as jitteriness and

irritability

coffee also stimulates gastric emptying, and this will increase blood

sugars quickly
