Guest guest
Dear Mohanji, Thank you for asking this question, as I am sure many people in our community would like to know the answer to this as well. Constipation is usually a Vata (Vayu) imbalance. There are many remedies to this in Ayurveda. Firstly, the food one takes is the most important, especially if the constipation is chronic/on-going. The foods of choice to alliviate constipation are ones that will help to balance Vata dosha. Please see message/post #5033 and read which foods are best for Vata, and which to avoid. In general, foods that are moist, warm, and heavy are best for Vata imbalance. Avoiding foods and beverages that are cold, light or dry and avoiding the foods/beverages which have bitter or astringent taste is most important. Taking the proper food is the best way to cure contipation, however, we have in Ayurveda some wonderful herbs that will help also. Triphala is amoung the best for this condition. Triphala is a compund of three fruits- Amalaki, Bhibitaki and Haritaki. If you are in India, Triphala Gritam (medicated ghee with triphala) can be purchased at any pharmacy. The severity of the constipation will determine the dose of Triphala Gritam. Triphala in powder form is excellent too. Take approx. 5gm (or two teaspoons full) of Triphala powder and put it in about 250ml (one cup) of room-temperature spring water. Stir it well, and let this sit overnight. Drink the water (not the powder) upon rising in the morning. After drinking, fill the cup with 250ml more spring water and let this sit all day. In the evening, drink the water and the Triphala powder. Continue this practice untill the constipation is alliviated, and normal bowel movements occur. I like to use the water-infusion method of taking Triphala, but you can also take it straight as a powder. If you take Triphala in a capsule, make sure to see if it is the extracts of the fruits, or the powder. Extracts require a lower dosage, and tend to have a more purgative effect rather than a gentle laxative effect. You can take Triphala without any reservation. It is perfectly harmless, being composed of fruits. It can be taken every day for the rest of this life without any side- effects. It is worth mentioning here that there are herbs with a purgative action- more forceful than Triphala. As these are strong drugs, I am not going to recommend them here. However, if you see a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, he/she will be able to help you further. Although it may be tempting because they cause quick bowel movents, try to avoid strong purgatives. They further vitiate Vata (Vayu), and can worsen the constipation in the long run. If the constipation is accute, purgative herbs are OK, however they can be habit- forming and due to their strength, can possibly damage the mucosa/lining of the intestines or colon. Triphala is the one that can be taken everyday, with absolutely no worries of side-effects of dependance. I wish you good health. Guest guest
Dear Mohan ji You have asked medicine about constipation. It is ideal that concerned person should take green vegetbles and seasonal fruits. If one has a moderate diet plan then no one would suffer from constipation.Exept it one can use trifla churna (powder) for constipation. It should take at bed time one small tea spoon with luke warm water. It helps alot. Except it one should do Yogic kriyas for body fitness. Guest guest
Mr. Rahi is very right in his suggestion. however in case the problem persists, senna leaf powder and irritant purgatives like castor oil can also be used. But both are really strong in action and should be used according to the gravity of the problem. teji rahi <teji_rahi wrote:Dear Mohan ji You have asked medicine about constipation.
