Dear kankan,

These are few things about sesame oil

“Kashayaanurasam swaadu sukshmamushnam vyvayee cha

Pittalam badda vinmootram na cha shleshmabhivardhanam

Vataghneyshoottamam balyam twchyam medhaghnivardhanam

Tailam samyaoga samskaarat sarvarogapaham matham

Tailam prayogaadajarah nirvikarah jitashramah

Aasannati balah sanghnai daityadipatayah purah”

------- Charaka Samhita Sutra stana 27 chapter Aharayogivarga

Sesame oil: Commonly known as tila taila , it is the most commendable of

all oils. It is sweet with accompanying astringent taste, hot in potency (ushna

virya) and is endowed with properties to penetrate subtle channels of the body

(Sukhshma).along with a special quality called as Vyavayi, means by virtue of

this quality and unlike the other drugs, spreads all over the body then

metobolised. Sesame oil increases pitta but not kapha. Thus it stands on top to

alleviate vata and the best.

Balya(Often this can be referred as immune booster),Good for skin,

Enhance intelligence and appetite as well (Medhagnivardhanam),Relieves

constipation by lubricating the colon, also relieves suppressed urination.

Used regularly for Abhyanga (Massage), sesame oil is wonderful for

reducing stress and tension, nourishing the nervous system and preventing

nervous disorders, relieving fatigue and insomnia, and promoting strength and

vitality. The antioxidants it contains help in slowing the ageing process and

increasing longevity, and regular oiling of the skin restores moisture to the

skin, keeping it soft, flexible and young looking. It also lubricates the body

internally, particularly the joints and bowels, and eases symptoms of dryness

such as irritating coughs, cracking joints and hard stools.

Used in abundance in the panchkarma therapy, sesame oil promotes

general strength and skin health and is recommended to be applied in all types

of cuts and wounds, insect bites, as enemata and massage oil in the diseases of

the nervous system like paralysis, stiffness of the limbs and muscle weakness.

Many famous classic ayurvedic oils such as Mahanarayani Taila, Bhringraj Taila,

Jatyadi Taila and Brahmi Amla Taila are prepared in the sesame oil base

In Ayurveda the word for oil is taila. Taila is originated from the

formal word tila. Tila means sesam. This base of hebal (or medicated oils) which

are used in Abhyanga is sesam oil.

In vitro, sesame seed oil has inhibited replication of human colon

cancer cells (Anti cancer research 11: 209-216, 1992. In vitro, sesame seed oil

has inhibited the growth of malignant melanoma (a skin cancer): (prostaglandin

leukatrines and essential fatty acids 46: 145-150, 1992) Research shows that

sesame seed oil is a potent antioxidant. In the tissues beneath the skin, this

oil will neutralize oxygen radicals. It penetrates into the skin quickly and

enters the blood stream through the capillaries. Molecules of sesame seed oil

maintain good cholesterol (HDL) and lower bad cholesterol (LDL). On the skin,

oil soluble toxins are attracted to sesame seed oil molecules which can then be

washed away with hot water and a mild soap. Internally, the oil molecules

attract oil soluble toxins and carry them into the blood stream and then out of

the body as waste. Sesame seed oil absorbs quickly and penetrates through the

tissues to the very marrow of the bone. It enters into the

blood stream through the capillaries and circulates. The liver does not sweep

sesame seed oil molecules from the blood, accepting those molecules as friendly.

Sesame seed oil helps joints keep their flexibility. It keeps the skin supple

and soft. It heals and protects areas of mild scrapes, cuts and abrasions. It

helps tighten facial skin, particularly around the nose, controlling the usual

enlargement of pores as skin ages chronologically.
