bahurUpA : Of manifold form.

The De. BhAg. Pr. says, "She is formless because she is supreme, she

is many-formed because of her activity" Though she is of the nature of

Para-brahman she is the agent of action, such as the slaying of

BhandAsura, etc. As she assumes such forms she is said to be many-

formed. The GaudapAda-sUtra [8] says,"Though one, she becomes many in

order to destroy BhandAsura". The devi Pr also, "Her forms are many,

immovable and movable, - Devas, men, animals, hence Devi is called

many formed" SU-sam. [iV. 47-64] says, "I adore Her who is supremest

of the supreme, who is one and two, and sixteen and thirty-two"

Two, may mean vowel and consonant. The vowels are sixteen and

consonants are thirty-two. La and La are the same; Ha is the root of

all and is not counted among the consonants but properly speaking the

consonants are thirty-three. Ha is the beginning syllable of this

SahasranAman [Hayagriva...] it is the orgin of all the therefore the

number is thirty-two. The De. BhAg. Pr says, "Laksmi [the syllable Ha]

shines like a dancer through the manifestation of speech" The VAmana

Pr. also, "This Universe is known as manifold, she is everywhere,

hence Siva is said to be many formed".

Or, BahurUpA : she is the wife of the countless Rudras as described in

the Sruti [RudrAdhyAya], "There are countles Rudras in the world," She

is many formed. The VarAha Pr., "The dark [tamas] energy called RaudrI

is said to be CAmundA. There are nine crores of different CAmundAs.

The RAjasi, passionate energy, the protector of the universe, called

Vaisnavi, has differentiated into eighteen crores of energies. The

Energies of BrahmA belonging to satva is said to be infinate in

number; of all these energies, O earth, the Divine Rudra is the

husband as he is in all. All these great energies are forms created by

Siva, and he attends to all as their husband. One who worships these

[energies], Rudra becomes pleased with him; these energies are also

delighted with him; of this there is no doubt" Concerning these things

the Nrsimha Pr. says, "UmA alone in many forms is the wife [of al lthe

forms of Siva.]"

The tripurAsiddhAnta also, "O fair-faced one, LopAmundrA, SaubhAgyA

and the great VidyA, the sixteen-syllabled one, are said to be the

wives of ParaSiva. O beloved one, SyAmalA, SuddhavidyA, HayArUdha,

ParA are said to be the Wives of SadAsiva. MahArdhA, DvAdasArdhA,

VarAhi, BagalAmukhi, TuriyA, Bhuvanesi, the supreme sambhavi, listen

to me, are the wives of Rudra. TiraskArini, Laksmi, MisrA, KAmakalA

are said to be the wives of Visnu, and AnnapUrni to Siva. VAgvAdini

and BAlA are the wives of BrahmA. The NavadUtis, Hasanti, the deities

of Navasiddhas, these and other many energies are your forms"

Similarly the meaning of the name BahurUpA is variously given in every

PurAna, in every UpapurAna, in every Tantra, but is here omitted to

avoid prolixity.

She is of multifarious manifestations. The Jagat (the World), the

Jiva (embodied souls) and Isvara (the Divine) are Her forms.

"bahUni yasyA rUpaAnI sthirAnI ca carAni ca, deva mAnusya stiryAn ca

bahurUpA ta taH sivA: She has many forms, divine, human, animal,

static and mobile; hence she is called Bahurpa." (Devi Purana)

Sahasranama, 1962
