I always like to hear the ancient stories Take Care My Friend DharmaDev baba108 <baba108 <> Thursday, August 15, 2002 4:29 PM Re: Rudraya Namaste this mantra is to Lord Rudra (he who cries) I will relate one story about him In the beginning of Kalpa (Age of Brahmaa) Brahmaa meditated on getting a child like himself and a child of blue complexion appeared on his lap. He ran here and there crying aloud. Brahmaa asked him why he was crying. To which he replied "I must be named."Because he was crying ( doing rodana ) Brahmaa named him Rudra ( He who cries ). He cried seven times more, so Brahma gave him seven more names. They were Bhava, Sharva, Ishana, Praqshupati, Bhiima, Ugra and Mahaadeva. The main scripture to Sri Rudra is the Rudraastaadhyaayii or the eight Chapters in Praise of Rudra ( it is actually nine chapters long). It is one of the most acclaimed and celebrated hymns to Lord Shiva in the world. It is chanted in all Shiva temples and especially in all the jyotir lingams. It is 5,000 to 20,000 years old. It emanates from the Shukla Yajur Veda. Chapter five is know as the Naamakam, because the verses contain special names of Shiva to which we bow( Naamana kara ) in devotion and offer oblations. Chapter Eight is known as the Chmamkam, because it contains a list of characteristics and qualities that are within us, and after each quality cha is inserted, meaning and. These two chapters make up the Sri Rudram.
