Would this be true? Also have read in at least three separate places, Malas are not to be seen by other people. (have searched for this info again, but cannot find) Have enclosed website where first question came from. Also wanted to share that the amount of information in these 312 pages is amazing! I'm usually just a lurker, and have started dabbling in rudrakshas for about a year, but this is my understanding: 1-There are some who wear their japa mala, probably because it reminds them to use it. 2-Some people just wear a mala for its other benefits. 3-"Seeds" versus stones, are much more absorbing than radiating. Therefore, rudraksha malas are more absorbing than say, a crystal mala. Hence, wearing a crystal mala (crystal would still absorb) after chanting with it, would help radiate the vibrations in and around you. Wearing a Rudraksha mala after chanting would do the same, but continue to absorb other negative vibrations, versus dispelling them. One Tantric site (siddhashram.org) has their devotees chanting their guru mantra on a crystal mala to invoke guru's grace, then wearing it as additional protection. 4-Wearing a rudraksha 'japa' mala, would require the recommended weekly (or forthnight) bathing of the mala to remove any accumulated negative vibrations or to recharge the mala, more so than one soley used for japa. 5-For the ideal japa benefits, there are tons of rules, or should I say "suggestions". One reason for not showing the mala is to maintain it's sanctity, so that your japa with it becomes 'special'. Not wearing it, is for a similar reason, that psychologically, you'll associate the japa mala with 'japa' and nothing else. These sorts of rules really only affect you if you do japa regularly and consistently. You won't notice much of a difference if you only occasionaly do japa with your mala. 6-There are other ideal "rules" such as not letting the mala touch the ground, or such as the position for holding the mala. Against the heart is ideal, but may be a problem for those with carpal tunnel or repetitive strain injuries in their arms. 7-Rudrakshas have a heating effect, which makes me unable to wear it at times, while other times it works great for absorbing karma, for lack of better words. I know when not to wear it when I start getting hives or feel uncomfortable. Wearing a crystal mala tends to have a cooling effect.
