Dear Members,

I have read that Wearer of Rudraksha should not eat Onion, Garlic and

Carrots. Meat is also not allowed.

Can't remember the ref. Can anyone confirm this, especially about

Onion, Garlic and Carrots.

Dear Nileshji

SriMadDeviBhagavat 11th Skand Chapter VII at about verse 40 has this reference

however there is no mention of carrots

The entire reference reads

The Fourteen Faced Rudraksam destroys all diseases and gives eternal health.

While holding this one ought not to take wine, flesh, onion, garlic, Sajna

fruit, Chalta fruit and the flesh of the Boar which eats excrements, etc.

One key phrase here are the words.......while holding this

Today we know that onions and garlic are extremely valuable for the good health

of the human body and carrots are also most important to eat

Doctors also sometimes recommend one small glass of wine on any given day as a

tonic to those patients whose physical body need this type of stimulation for

their metabolism and well being

If a person is drinking wine it would probably be best to remove any Rudraksa or

Rudraksa Malas that are being worn

Thanks and Take Care My Friend

I've eaten garlic and onions since I've been wearing rudraksha with

no difficulty. However, the last glass of wine I had was a week after

I started wearing rudraksha. I had half a glass. I then noticed the

rudraksha began itching and becoming all around annoying to my skin.

If you're going to drink, drink responsibly and remove the rudraksha!

About a year an half ago I received pujari training.

I couldn't eat garlic and onions and meat and alchohol wasn't allowed in

ashram.

The reason I was told was because I was taking care of murtis, enlivened

statues that are the presence of the actual deity. It was a sign of respect

to them to not be a stinky pujari :-)

So I would imagine that since the rudraksha are the embodiment of the devata,

onions and garlic often go through the pores on some people,,one wouldn't

want their

rudraksha smelling of sandalwood and garlic. Would be that you were offering

something stinky to Devata and not something pleasant.

Just a hunch.

In Ayurveda it is said that garlic keeps negative entities away. It

is also said that it keeps the Gods away too. It is Rajasic in

nature and not recomended for Yoga practice.

I'm a chef. I eat forbidden foods and have my hands in raw garlic, onions, pork

products, and then get home and drink beer, all the while wearing my very

auspicious rudraksha. One shouldn't forget that the kaula tantras insist that

their devotees eat the five meats, drink the five liquors, and eat the five

grains as well as practicing the five Ms. So it's all really up to you and

whether your vision of God is offended by certain actions or whether you accept

all. Siva is jiva, and jiva Shiva.

I found some references about carrot, onion and garlic as follows,

palandu lasunam sigrum alambum grjanam palam

bhunkte yo vai naro brahman vratam candrayanam caret

(Padma Purana, Brahma Khanda 19.10, spoken by Suta Gosvami)

O sages, one who eats garlic, onions, sigrum (a kind of plant),

turnips, bottle gourd and meat, that person should observe a

candrayana fast.

vrntakam jalisakam kusumbha smantakam tatha

palandu lasunam suklam niryasan caiva varjayet

grjanam kinsukan caiva kukundanca tathaiva ca

udumbaram alavun ca jagdhva patati vai dvijah

(Hari Bhakti Vilasa 8.158,159, from Kurma Purana)

One should not eat eggplant, banana leaves, sunflower leaves and

asmantaka leaves, onions, garlic. One should not eat sour gruel (a

thin watery pouriage) or the juice of the tree. One should also give

up turnips and beetroots, carrots, kinsuka, forest figs, and white

pumpkin. If the twice born persons eat these things, they all become

fallen.

Manu-samhita:

5.5. Garlic, leeks and onions, mushrooms and (all plants), springing

from impure (substances), are unfit to be eaten by twice-born men.

Garuda Purana:

1.96.72 "By eating garlic and onion one becomes sinful and as

atonement one should perform Candrayana

One more reference which is found in Rudraksha Jabala upanishad

posted in this newsgroup under the files section.

"One who wears Rudrakshas, should not use intoxicants, meat, garlic,

onions, carrots and all such prohibited things."

Just to satiesfy the toungue and removing redraksha to eat these

things looks practical but indicates that how weak is a person in

controlling his senses. It depends on individual's free will what to

do and not.

Dear friends,

There is lot of discussion on forbidden foods, especially, about Garlic and

Onion. I do not really uderstand why these two wonderful plants having so many

medicinal properties have been forbidden by Hindu Religion ? Garlic now a days

is considered as 'Wonder Plant of the World' It is considered as an excellent

medicine to reduce Cholesterol level in blood. Similarly, it has excellent

antibiotic properties to keep away most of the harmful microorganisms. There

was an excellent article in a famous popular science journal 'New Scientist'

possibly in May 1991 issue. I will send the exact details in a due course of

time. Because of its excellent medicinal properties scientific interest in

these two plants is day by day increasing. 'International Symposium on Garlic'

is held very frequently. Intrested friends are requested to do internet search

on these two plants. It is always recommended to chew at least 4 to 5 raw buds

of garlic everyday to keep you healthy.

Greetings friend:

These plants are wonderful to promote health. There is no question

about that. From a yogic stand point they are considered to be too

simulating and dulling of the mind. The mind is naturally the realm

of Sattva, or harmony and clarity. The foods we eat influences our

mind. For those not interested in Yoga practices or restoring their

minds to harmony and clarity, onions and garlic are fine. They help

keep the body strong which is helpful. Some people can eat these

foods and retain calmness and clarity in their minds. Garlic is

probably ok for them too. If the mind is prone to over activity,

dullness, anger or inertia it may help to cut these foods out.

It is similar to meat. There is nothing more building than meat for

the body. However, Ayurveda doesn't recomend it because it is not

clean fuel. It builds the tissue well, but it is of a poorer quality

than if the diet was vegetarian. When consumed and burned in the

body it can invite a consciousness of violence that may cloud the

clarity of our true nature. This viewpoint considers the evolution

of consciousness more important. A healthy body may be helpful to

live a long and happy life, but as has been said, a great yogi who

dies young has a much richer life than an ordinary man who lives 100

years.

Dear Respected Chandrashekharji

Thanking you many times for your intelligence and Knowledge regarding these

matters

In addition to this have always wondered about the high usage of Ghee in Indian

diet and its possible connection with shortend lifespan specific to Heart and

Blood problems

Am thinking that garlic would be a totally necessary item in diet to balance

cholesterol if Ghee is being eaten on a daily basis

Thanks and Take Care My Friend

Dear Listemembers,

The usage of these vegetables and meat is completely

forbidden in the vedas.First is that these are the

basic originators for tamasik and rajasik natures in

the people who use it.Secondly it severely affects

concentration, memory ,induces sleep and affects

pronounciation.Hence our great sages and maharshi's

deplored their usage.

This is exactly the reason why brahmins of the

past shied away from using these.Because during

learning of vedas mental concentration ,perfect speech

are basic requirements. For vedas to be pronounced

without any irregularities or doshas a perfect tongue

is required. Those who are from vedic backround will

understand how difficult it is to recite samhita's at

a stretch. On the day of Upakarma every brahmin is

given his first lesson in vedas namely the "Maheswara

Sooktha".Just try pronouncing it and you will find how

difficult its pronounciation is.The Maheshwara Sooktha

is nothing but the origin of the various

letters(sounds) when lord shiva performed the thandava

nrithya(dance).

It is not true that garlic and onion is regarded as wonder plant for

their medicinal properties by modern medicine.

It is Ayurveda which considers and described both of them very good

for health and not the modern system of medicine which has come to

know about its medicinal properties recently.

According to Ayurveda Garlic is very good for people suffering from

Arthritis as it reduces the effect of vata. Also garlic is considered

to be good for ladies. It is good for digestive disorders etc.
