Guest guest
Namaste: Looks as if you have entered into a realm where your own heart and intuition are going to teach you alot. Sounds as if you are talking about the basic mantras for the different deities or rudraksha, right ? They can be said in silence. What is called japa. There are a couple of resources I can offer. The work of Thomas Ashley- Farrand www.sansksritmantra.com is geared specifically for westerners to learn how to chant sanskrit correctly. He writes mantras out phonetically just for that purpose. Also, there is a wonderful singer by the name of Krishna Das who has some marvelous CD's of the major chants to help you with a tune. They are available from amazon.com and you can also read more about him at his website : www.krishnadas.com. You will find yourself singing easily with your heart. I have been off line for several days and was looking at some of your past posts. The reason why you have kept going to the website and looking at the malas is because you have had a connection with the rudraksha from a past life. The scriptures teach us this. This is why you want to chant with them and are asking such heartfelt questions. Thanks for asking this one :-) Om Namah Shivaya Kanti Rudra Center Heartland In a message dated 6/8/2003 4:30:17 PM Central Daylight Time, valcronin writes: > Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about finding sound > files online of the correct way to pronounce mantras! > > I received some emails commenting on the dangers of saying or using a > mantra incorrectly. Guest guest
Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about finding sound files online of the correct way to pronounce mantras! I received some emails commenting on the dangers of saying or using a mantra incorrectly. I've just begun chanting and between this action and the wonderful rudraksha mala I was sent, I have had some wonderful experiences. So my question is, if I use these mantras with pure intent, is there really some danger either to myself or others? I come with great respect for all that I am learning so I don't use this information whimsically. I'm not chanting for wealth or power but with the hope that I can be a better person so I can 'give' more to others and not be so focused on my own problems. Must I study for years before I can worship without fear of doing something incorrectly and possibly harming another person? One individual wrote, "Do not chant mantras without proper training. A mantra is an energy codified in sound,so chanting should be at the right pitch and with the rght pronunciation!" (no disrepect meant to the individual who wrote to me). I am grateful for this individual's concern for my well-being and thank that person for taking the time to share their concerns. I have been reading many posts on this board and would appreciate if those of you with experience chanting could help me to understand whether I can harm someone just by introducing mantras in to my life. Take care and thank you for all your comments! Val

Guest guest
>From a Buddhist standpoint, all sounds are mantras, and at best they reveal the salient awareness within. At worst they don't do anything. If the intention is altruistic then no mistakes can be made. If the intention is toward a specific goal then details must also be specific. - valeriecronin Sunday, June 08, 2003 4:29 PM RBSC : The dangers of chanting mantras? Guest guest
Dear Val As far as chanting goes i am sorry but there is really no other way.Since your intention seems pure and subtle i recommend that you take refuge in a guru, even a piece of stone would do. Offer your complete love and surrender to it and then seek for forgiveness for the mistakes that you would be making while chanting ,then chant at a very low pitch keeping the base high.pausing at the end of each line momentarily. At the begining aand end chant "Om Shri Guruvaye Namah" Do not forget your daily salutations to your Guru,Your experiences in the path would guide you wether you are moving right or wrong. Blessings to you Yogi Ashwini valeriecronin <valcronin wrote: Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about finding sound files online of the correct way to pronounce mantras! Guest guest
Dear Val , The same thoughts came to my mind even while I was involved in chanting for some time and I put my queries to Ashley Ferrand of Sanskrit mantra.com. This is his reply pasted down here. Feel this would help you as well. Amongst my queries were if one could chant on behalf of some one. " I never said you should chant only under the strict guidanceof a guru. You might have me confused with someone else. In fact, in all my books I state that Sanskrit is the language of your chakras and will work WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE FORMALLY INITIATED. However, I also give the reason and advantages of initiation from someone who has unwrapped their power. Advancement can be much quicker. You may chant on behalf of someone else, but always preface it with the statement, I am doing this for the benefit of ______. I am not taking their karma. IN this world, peace of mind is quite valuable. But do not give up on the Gayatri. Sometimes the great ones move us along without our knowing it until the right time. Guest guest
Thank you all for your insights. I will consider your suggestions and will listen to my heart and if this feels like the path I wish to follow, I will definitely seek further guidance from those who have practiced for many years. Right now, I'm just trying to see if this feels like the right path for me. Thank you for your patience in answering my questions. I appreciate it greatly Take care!
