Dear Ryanji

Fungus can take many forms from something that looks like spores on stale bread

to actual small mushroom type growth

Is mostly caused by beads sitting in an atmosphere of humidity and lack of

exposure to light by wearing or brushing on a regular basis

There was one situation in Mumbai where I might have seen spores on Rudraksa in

a collection that was kept in box at time of year when humidity was high and the

Beads had not been brushed on a regular basis

The other situation was when we were unsuccessfully trying to set up a program

to buy Beads from RudrakshaNepal that is run by Suresh Basnet......He had not

let the Beads dry before he packaged them for shipment......dureing shipment

they actually grew 1/4 inch grey fur type fungus all over the Beads and some

Beads actually had some species of Mushrooms growing out of the exterior

surface.......was extremely weird to see a shipment like this

Some of the Beads were so covered with this fungus that they looked like the

outside of a tennis ball

We finally had to give up trying to buy from this person

Hope this helps

Thanks and Take Care My Friends

Respected Dharmadevji,

As you have rightly pointed out, more humidity, low temperature and lack of

Sunlight are the optimum factors for fungus growth. Constant wearing of the

beads and brushing helps to keep away variety of fungi and insects from our

valuable beads. There are different types of fungi which grow on Rudraksha

beads. These fungi secrete variety of metabolites or chemicals during their

growth. These chemicals slowly act on the beads developing minute cracks and

then totally spoiling them. Few of these fungi also attract different types of

tiny insects and mites. Funal spores are used by such insects and mites as

their food. These insects also spoil the beads. Spoilage of beads is one of

the major problem faced by Rudraksha collectors.

With personal regards.

Dear Respected Chandrashekharji

Thank you for this valuable Knowledge My Friend. Is good Ryanji brought this

matter to our group site because is one of those areas that we need to be aware

of. Many Families in India must be aware of this also because the Holy Rudraksa

I am new a member and new to all of this, have learnt a lot from the groups

input. Just thought of sharing some infor that I have on Rudrakshas is

that, one way of testing them for their authenticy is to soak them in

mustard oil for more than 30 days, and that also, does something to the

beads so they won't grow mildew, probably pickels them. If the bead are

fake, they will fall apart or swell when soaked in mustard oil for 30 to 90

days.

Hope this helps.

Appreciate reading all the infor.
