Abstract

 

The leaves of Elaeocarpus grandiflorus J. E. Smith (fam.

Elaeocarpaceae) have been traditionally utilized to treat skin

diseases. The chloroform:methanol (1:1 v/v) extract of this material

(1 mg/ml) inhibited the growth of Staphyllococcus aureus and Candida

albicans. By bioassay-guided solvent extraction and partition, an

active substance was isolated. This substance inhibited the growth

of S. aureus (62.5 m g/ml) and C. albicans (125 m g/ml). Based on

the NMR data, the active substance was confirmed to consist of two

major compounds and were identified as 3,4,5-trimethoxygeraniin

(compound 1, m/z 994) and geraniin (compound 2, m/z 952)

Abstrak

 

Daun Elaeocarpus grandiflorus J. E. Smith (fam. Elaeocarpaceae)

digunakan untuk mengobati penyakit kulit. Ekstrak kloroform:metanol

(1:1 v/v) daun E. grandiflorus (1 mg/ml) mampu menghambat

pertumbuhan Staphyllococcus aureus dan Candida albicans. Dengan

metoda ekstraksi dan partisi yang termonitor aktivitasnya, isolat

aktif berhasil diisolasi dan ditentukan strukturnya. Isolat aktif

mampu menghambat pertumbuhan S. aureus pada kadar 62,5 m g/ml dan C.

albicans pada kadar 125 m g/ml. Berdasarkan data spektroskopi NMR,

isolat aktif diketahui terdiri 2 senyawa utama yaitu 3,4,5-

trimetoksigeraniin (senyawa 1, m/z 994) dan geraniin (senyawa 2, m/z

952).
