Hello All:

I have a question regarding observance of Chaturthi and Sankata hara

Chaturthi Vrata. Does the time to fast start after the moon sets on

the previous day (tritiya, for example) and if so when do you break

the fast? OR does one observe fast from moonrise to moonset on that

particular day (chaturthi, for example).

Any help from knowledgable folks in this matter would be greatly

appreciated.

Dear Dharmadevji:

Thank you for Shastriji's contact. As you know, different tithis

(lunar days) are considered auspicious for different dieties and it

is a common practice to observe Vratas(austerities primarily

involving fasts and special pujas) on those days. For example

Vaishnavites observe fast on ekadashi(11th day of the lunar

fortnight). Similarly for Ganesha, the fourth day of the waxing moon

(Chaturthi or shukla paksha chaturthi) and the fourth day of the

waning moon (called Sankata or Sankhashta hara chaturthi or krishna

paksha chaturthi by some) are considered very auspicious especially

the latter for removing all obstacles.

My question was on when to start and end the fast. Hope this helps.

Will contact the Pandit.

To add to that,

Sankashta or Samkashta is interpreted by many as obstacles and hara

means "to vanquish, defeat or eliminate". Hence, the name of the vrata

defines the austerity as one that helps aliminate all obstacles. Hope

this helps.

Dear Shri.Suraj Raghavan,

I am a Maharashtrian. In Maharashtra, the Chaturthi falling in a Krishna

Paksha, is called as a 'Sankashti Chaturthi'. On this day we observe fast from

Sun-rise to Moon rise on the same day. However, no body eats anything before

Sunrise and the fast is observed from the time you weak-up. The most auspicious

Sankat haran or Sankashti Chaturthi is a Chaturthi falling on Tuesday and is

called as 'Anagark yog Chaturthi', it comes only twice in a year.

Thanking you and with regards.

Dear Dr. Phadke:

Thank you very much for your response. This was my understanding too

until recently when trying to pick up on some astronomy, i found out

that the "Moon Rise" is quite different from the time you first "see"

the moon. So for example today where i live the moon actually rises

at 3.46pm and sets at 3.16 am. This may be a moot point since in the

olden days people probably went by when they could first see the moon

but i just wanted to make sure i wasn't doing anything wrong.

Appreciate your help.
