Dear Garyji

Namaskar Mitra and thank you for your message........yes seems your first

impression is correct........is most in auspicious to carve Murthi from this

material.....if this material is really an ivory....need to know more........are

you sure this is a statue of Goddess Lakshmi or could it be a statue from

Chinese carveing origin....and Chinese Deity..........are you sure it it

elephant

ivory and not whale ivory or a composit material that is made to look like

Ivory as Ivory is mostly illegal due to International Law CITES that is the

Convention on Trade in Endangered Species....CITES still has a problem with

China

following and enforeceing the International Guidelines to protect species from

the last information I have.........although I am not familiar with all the

Hindu Artisans I am doubting they would carve a Murthi from Elephant Ivory due

to

the way Ivory is taken by force by humans who kill and destroy the Families

of the Elephant Nations

anyone else with more information please reply

Thanks and Take Care

This question is offtopic, but I feel that the wonderful souls here

will give good feedback on this. Are Ivory Idols inauspicious? I've

found an old one of Lakshmi here in the US that I am very drawn to

purchase , but I'm wondering if this might be an affront/insult to Ganesh?

Dear Gary,

Good question.

Yes, with all certainty, I would assume that if an elephant has been

killed to obtain the ivory, it is highly inauspicious and very bad

karma to use this for a murti or what to speak of a deity.

The elephant is a very sacred animal.

If the ivory has been obtained from a wild elephant that expired

naturally or a tame elphant was treated well, then it is different.

There may be some details about this in the Manu Samhita, the most

famous of the Vedic Law Books.

Dear Garyji,

In my opinion buying any idol or product made of ivory is inauspicious. Most of

the ivory available now is the result of poaching. Even if the piece you see is

not, buying it tells the poachers there is a market for ivory and indirectly

supports their efforts. Try a parad Lakshmi or one made of another material.

There are even gold ones available if you want something like that.

I avoid any product made of elephant ivory, for fear of offending

Lord Ganesh.
