Guest guest
Hello everyone, Thanks for the interesting discussions as of late, I feel I've increased my understanding of rudraksha manifold already. I have question for you all regarding japa mala size. I believe I read somewhere of the minimum suggested size for a rudraksha mala being 6 or 7mm. I am personally trying to choose between a 5 and 6 mm mala. Maybe 5mm mala will be too small for japa. Which would you choose? Thanks. Guest guest
Hello Maryjo - It is a matter of personal preference as to whether you wear your japa mala around the neck or not. No hard and fast rules need apply. Malas are generally designed in multiples of 9 with 108 being a sacred multiple of nine times twelve. But a mala that long is a bit awkward to carry for some people and so japa malas are often made with 54, 27, 18 or 9 beads. In addition there is an extra "Guru" or "Sumeru" bead which marks the end of a round and traditionally, one reverses the mala and goes in the opposite direction, not crossing the Sumeru bead. Personally, I use a mala for japa of nine (plus one Sumeru) large (16mm.) Nepalese 5 mukhi Rudraksha beads linked on metal. This is a wrist sized mala that fits in a pocket and is carried easily in the hand. I use it only for japa and only for one specific japa mantra. I have another wrist sized mala of 27 plus 1 faceted 7mm. quartz crystal beads with the Sumeru bead of Tulsi (Holy Basil root). This one is small and easy to carry and I use it only for another specific mantra japa. When used in this way, the malas become supercharged with the vibrations of the mantras and are themselves powerful little radiators of spiritual energy. Even when not being used for japa, they are wonderful personal protection devices and can be held during meditation or placed under your pillow at night to enhance sleep. Hope this is clear....
