Dear Friends

Found a reference in the book Gems and Rudraksa that states the

Emerald paicifies mental disturbance

The planet Mercury is regarded as the prince among the assembly of

planets. Mercury is son of the Moon and in the human body represents

wisdom and voice. Mercuryi s the ruler of the two sihns of the Zodiac

The Gemini and The Virgo. The Gem related to Mercury is Emerald

Emerald is a fragile and delicate stone found in the mines of coke.

Black spots and filaments are often seen in it due to high presence

of carbon in it. In genuine Emerald cracks are often found however

this does not affect its utility

By wearing it a man can pacify mental disturbances. It should be worn

especially by Diplomats, geniuses, scientists, astrologers, teachers,

architects, doctors, businessmen, property dealers, publishers,

accountants, engineers, writers, post officers, insurance officers

and intellectuals. It increases reasoning power and prescence of mind

and spiritual power

On account of wearing Emerald the Goddess of Learning Sri Saraswati

sharpens the intellect of students, singers, dancers, musicians.

The weight of Emerald should be at least 2.5 ratti ( 300 mg ) for a

ring or pendant. Its power increases with weight and an Astrologer

should really be consulted for the exact weight needed. Emerald

should be imbedded in Five Metal or Silver Ring. The ring should be

washed with unboiled milk before 11 AM. After touching this ring to

the feet of the desired God and chanting Om Bum Budhaye Namah Om it

should be worn on the smallest finger donating money to a Brahman and

green vegetables with leaves should be fed to a cow

Main effect of Emerald is 3 years since the time of wearing. Persons

of Gemini sign of the Zodiac whose name start with Ka, Ki, Ku, Gha,

Anga, Cha, Ke, Ko, Kay and persons of Virgo sign of the Zodiac

haveing the name starting with To, Pa, Pee, Pu, Sha, Ana, Tha, Pay,

Po should wear the ring embedded with Emerald

According to western opinion the persons born on dates 5, 14, 23 of

any month or during the period between 15th June and 15 July and the

duration between 17 September and 16 October should wear the emerald

ring. Persons with lucky number 5 can also wear Emerald

If Emerald is not available any of its subsititue like margaz,

peridot, tourmaline ( green ) or onex can be worn in place of Emerald

Thank you, DharmaDev for bringing focus to the emerald as the primary

gemstone for Mercury. To add to what you have already shared, according to

Vedic Astrology, emerald can be safely worn by those with the following

ascendents: Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius. In other

words, exactly those ascendents for whom wearing Red Coral would be avoided.

The best substitutes (in descending order of power) for the very expensive

emerald include those gems listed by DharmaDev as well as green sapphire,

tsavorite (green garnet), chryoprase, jade and aventurine quartz.

Also, the four mukhi Rudraksha can serve in very similar application as

emerald but at far lower cost. A beautiful mala of four mukhi beads can be

had from Rudra Centre and can be used by those needing to strengthen the

Mercury energy but whose ascendents make it unsafe to wear emeralds. I am

one of those persons and I have a lovely mala that I strung myself from 27

loose four mukhi beads from Miss Neeta with sphatik spacer beads. As I am

an astrologer and writer, Mercury figures very powerfully in my life, so the

four mukhi Rudraksha mala is indispensible for me.

Peace to all,

Alan

Hello,

I have a Sagittarius ascendant and for me green emerald is a good stone.

What I mean is that emerald can be used by other ascendants besides the six

mentioned here ( Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius ) at

least according with Systems Approach of Prof, V. K. Choudhry.

Hello Jorge - there are certain rare exceptions to the ascendent rule, such

as when Mercury is debilitated or otherwise afflicted and one is in

Mercury's Dasa, but I am not familiar with the system you mention.

There is a school of thought in Vedic Astrology that recommends wearing the

gems of functional malefics to appease or propitiate them, but that has been

found to be flawed and therefore, the vast majority of Vedic Astrologers

recommend the wearing of gems only for functional benefics, except in rare

cases as I mentioned above.... the challenge with gemstones in general is

that they need to be chosen very carefully to avoid negative effects...

Alan

Dear Alan,

Thank you for the bhasma. I have 87 4-mukhi beads, all, except one, are of a

fair size. I put them together on a mala (85 beads) before I found the other

two. I know that this mala has the wrong number of beads. Does this matter?

Are only clear sphatik beads for the devi, or can any quartz beads do even

if they be of different colours; for example, carnelian is rose quartz,

amethyst is purple quartz? In addition, does one count the sphatik beads in

a mala or does one count only the rudraksha beads? Do you do japa on the

sphatik beads also? Are sphatik beads sacred to Devi as rudraksha are to

Siva and tulsi are to Visnu? Are there beads which are sacred to the Devi

upon which one should do Her mantras?

Hi Barbara - the number of beads is not of much importance compared to the

fact that you are wearing them. If they are used for japa, multiples of

nine are considered auspicious. As far as stones for this or that deity,

again what is important is your intention and devotion. The stone is a

relatively minor consideration, but yes, the clear quartz is considered

sacred for Devi. Carnelian is not rose quartz, but rather it is another

form of quartz known as chalcedony or micro-crystalline quartz. You can

count the sphatik beads if you are actually doing japa with them. My four

mukhi mala is just for wearing, not for japa. It's too big and unwieldy for

japa...

I guess my point is that the material level counts far less than the

intention and devotion in your focus. One could use glass or simple wooden

beads of any number and create a far more powerful sense of divine union

than giving so much attention to the material and number of beads with an

inconsistent or fragmented focus. The greatest saints and sages of all

times say that Consciousness is the great transformer, not the details of

this or that procedure or ritual.

regards,

alan
