Have also learned when studying the scriptural references pertaining to rudrakshas of being very mindful what is coming from Scripture itself and what is a human being's interpretation of the scripture that has been published or what is regional folklore.. Is a possibility that the Shiva story you mentioned is just that..a story and not coming directy from the pages of scripture... Also do not what to say regarding your recent find at thrift store..not seeing the beads themselves..What needs to be remembered with rudraksha is that the beads have protrusions and that in beads that small it will more than likely only have 5 lines and they will be not very defined. The ones I bought yesterday did not seem to me to have been a religious mala, although the ones I bought previously seemed as though they may have. I am going to plant some of the seeds from the ones which I bought yesterday; I guess that they are not rudraksha, and I think that I may be able to identify them if I can get some of the seeds to grow--may not have any luck though.
