Dear Tigreji

In the southern part of india, in the temples when the lamp with five oil wicks

is shown as arthi to the lord and then taken around by the purohits(person

performing the pooja) for the devotees, then devotees give some offerings

(Coins) in the vacant place in the front.(These coins are sometimes the only

source of income for the purohits in small temples), in larger temples they also

get a salary.

Also when the purohit wants to distribute some prasad(sweet dish) etc. or

flowers to the devotees, he takes it from the garbha graha ( i.e the room where

the idol of the lord is) , and keeps it in the front (of the lamp-the vacant

large circular space) so that he is able to carry it hand over to each devotee.

Only the five small circles in the front are used for lighting the lamp.(as

simoneji mentioned).

Thank you Simoneji,

the info I was seeking was concerning this exact type of lamp in the

Rudraksha Ratna web page - the paanch aarti lamp. I understand it

would mean 5 lights lamp, and there are indeed 5 little dishes for

the wicks (i already know how to use them).

To repeat my question: i would like to know what is put in the big

dish in the middle?

I hope someone has knowledge in this matter to explain how it works.

It is a very pretty lamp and I would like to use it.

Hoping for a kind answer

Dear Vipinji and other Members, thank you for this interesting

information. Indian culture is so rich and as I haven't had the

chance to visit, every (seemingly) little detail is of importance to

me. Thanks to the kindness of Group Members I have been able to

explain many things to my circle of friends who are also on the path

of Sanatana Dharma.

Warmest regards and thanking you all,

Tigre
