Dear Jim & all, Namaste,

 

Regarding the Bhagavad Gita – while I certainly can't claim to be

an expert on the Bhagavad Gita I feel that the version you have of

the text (As It is-Bhaktivedanta) is not a good one. Unless you

belong to ISKCON that is. The translation and commentary, IMHO, are

far removed from most translations and commentaries on The Lord's

Song. If someone is new to the Gita I personally feel that it would

be wise to steer well clear of this version. As this is the Gita

strongly interpreted in the light of this tradition's philosophy and

perspective.

 

There are many versions of the Gita available out there (many are

very affordable which helps) and there are also many sites

containing the Gita. A site with several notable translations and

commentaries of the Gita is the Gita Supersite -

http://www.gitasupersite.iitk.ac.in/ Highly recommend this site.

Other hard copies of translations and/or commentaries worth studying

that I would recommend include Gandhi's, Adi Shankara's,

Jnaneshwari, Juan Mascaro's, Abhinavagupta's and Aurobindo's (as

already mentioned by Bonnie I believe).

 

Please appreciate that I do not like to knock someone else's beliefs

and faith in the sacred texts. But the Gita is such a jewel and I

would feel sorrow if someone who was taking an interest in it then

turned away from the Gita because they were reading a skewed or

unreliable translation, interpretation and commentary of the text.

It is just too valuable for that to happen.
