Guest guest
Two things-- there are some excellent published commentaries on the scriptures, if one needs them. Also...one can achieve enlightenment through meditation, alone, even without scriptures. It is often said that when one prays, one talks to God. When one meditates, one listens to God. All of the knowledge of Reality is within--our natural birthright as children of the Gods. Please don't forget the amazing revelations that come to one after a "kundalini rush." That being said.. I think that if one wants a personal relationship with a particular God or Gods, one DOES need to know the mythologies. There are many paths to God. In some areas, a teacher may not be available. Some people aren't suited to tuteledge from a guru. It's all in the individual situation.
