Militants kill 22 Hindus in remote Jammu villages http://in.rediff.com/news/2006/may/01jk.htm May 01, 2006 09:43 IST Last Updated: May 01, 2006 15:24 IST In a large-scale strike, militants gunned down 22 Hindus, including a nine-year-old girl, after dragging them out of their houses in two villages of Doda district, about 300 kms from Jammu, in the wee hours of Monday. Of the nine injured in the attack, which came two days before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's meeting with moderate Hurriyat leaders, eight have been airlifted to Jammu in Army choppers and admitted to a hospital. The injured included a woman and her daughter. Several heavily-armed Laskhar-e-Toiba militants, wearing combat fatigues, reached the remote hamlets of Panjdobi and Thava at around 2 am, and ordered the villagers to come out of their houses. The militants then lined them up outside the houses of the local village heads and opened indiscriminate fire at them, killing 22 people and injuring nine, officials here said. The attack, the first major strike against the minority community in the past three years, came hours after militants killed four of the nine Hindus they had abducted from a village in neighbouring Udhampur district. Senior police officials have rushed to the twin villages to take stock of the situation. According to reports, some of the villagers rushed to the nearby Army camp and informed them about the killing. Those gunned down included the family of one Sham Lal, a local village head. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but Inspector General of Police (Jammu) S P Vaid told PTI that Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were being held responsible for the massacre. Condemning the strike, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kasmhir Muzaffar Baig said the attack was against the Indo-Pak peace process. "By singling out Hindus for such a major massacre, they are sending a message to the entire Indian nation that this exercise (peace process) undertaken by the government is futile," he said. It was also aimed at spoiling the environment for the second roundtable conference convened by the prime minister later this month, he added. Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said in Delhi that the attack was born out of frustration by the militants over Jammu and Kashmir's gradual return to normalcy. The last major attack against minorities in the state was in 2003, when militants gunned down 24 Kashmiri Pundits in Nadimarg village near Shopian in Pulwama district. Pawan Bali CNN-IBN Posted Tuesday , March 28, 2006 at 13:19 Updated Tuesday , March 28, 2006 at 15:14 Email Print Talwara (J& K): Rs 8,000 for a nine year old, Rs 10,000 for a 13 year old and if you can afford a little more money, you might just be able to strike a deal at Rs 15,000 for a grown-up teenager. These are the prices parents in the Talwara migrant camp in Jammu and Kashmir are demanding for their children. Krishna Devi has sold her three daughters for Rs 20,000. The girls are now working as labourers and household maids. When we asked her what made her take the step, she says it was poverty. "I have sold my daughters. What could have I done? We needed money. It’s been eight years now and we have not been able to repay that money and get our children back. My husband works as a labourer, but the money he earns is hardly enough to feed my other two children," a resident of the Talwara migrant camp, Krishna Devi, says The Talwara camp comprises of over 640 families who have migrated from Doda, Poonch-Rajouri because of militant attacks. Those already staying in the camp say over 200 children from the camp have either been sold or mortgaged for a few thousand rupees. Some of those who were taken outside the state have not even returned. "It was a deal of Rs 8,000, but we never got the money after working for a month and seven days. My son’s dead body was found as they had killed him," another camp resident, Tichoo Devi, who had also sold her son, adds. When the CNN-IBN team questioned local officials about the issue of the children being sold, they denied such a situation. But the ground reality as was witnessed by the team was very different and never near to the situation projected by the offficials. The children in these migrant camps have a difficult option, but it is even more difficult for their parents. To bring up one child, the other has to be sold. And it is the cruel curse of poverty that's putting the young lives at stake. ---------------------------- WHERE IS SO CALLED INDIAN SHIKANDI SECULAR POLITICIANS ? Minority rights Minority Rights What About Hindus ? Remember! Hindus First it was pakistan, then kashmir and now its Assam. Whereever and whenever muslim majority has been established ,Hindus and other non-muslims have been driven away from thier homes. Hindus have thus lost lands on which they lived for thousands of years! In the mid 20th century , during british rule, muslims fought for a seperate muslim state- pakistan which was carved out of the india. 16. Whats worse is that india is still not free from islamic terror. The hindu must awake to the reality around him instead of living on in an idealist/secularist dream and get robbed of his rights as the legitimate citizen of india....
