paNcAsatpitharUpini : Fifty seats.

PaNcasat [fifty] : the expression here generally stands for fifty-0ne.

Hence Harsadiksita in commenting on the first verse of the

sAradAtilaka "His body is eternal bliss, etc" expalins fifty as fifty-

one.

The fifty-one seats [pithas] are from KAmarUpa to ChAyAchatra. [see

Yoginihrdaya for the 51 names, III. 40-46] Therefore in the PithanyAsa

which is included in the SadhAnyAsa, the fifty-one pithas are

mentioned. The BrahmA. Pr. says, clearly on this point :"Then must be

established in order the fifty-one pithas.... Those [pithas] possessed

with the order of letters should be established in their [proper]

places of letters." The Yoginihrdaya [iII. 39-46] also says, "O

beloved one, one should established the pithas in the places of divine

letters [mAtrkAs]... These pithas are said to be the forms of letters"

Thus by saying that the pithas are the place of letters, it is

explained clearly that the pithas are fifty-one. In the commentaries

on the above works it is explained that th ealphabet from ! to Ksa is

to be established in each place and the nyAsa of the pithas should be

performed in each place of them [letters]. The author of the

Sundarimahodays says that the pithas are only fifty, having the

syllable ksa out of count. This is wrong because the above quotations

[from JNAnArnava, etc] regulate the pithas according to the mAtrkAs.

She is of the form of Sabda-Brahma [God as The Word]. The letters of

the alphabet, from A to Ksa, which are her pithas [seats] are also

Her forms.
