Guest guest
Hari OM! Dear all, If any one can throw light on the Sri Shankaracharya and his cheater disciple Paad Padam, who having the false ego, studied the scriptures under Shankaracharya and tried to kill him finally that he want to become the ultimate Guru. I have never heard of such a story about Padma Paada. The very name Padma Pada was given to him, Sanandana, because he responded to the call of his Guru Shankara from across a river, in spate, by just getting into the water and approaching Shankara. His devotion to the Guru was appreciated by the river which placed a lotus at every step of his on the water. Again, it was his Guru bhakti that made him 'save' Shankara by killing the Kaapaalika by invoking Lord Narasimha, his upasya devataa. (for details, pl. read the recent post of member Dhyanasarasvati on 'TitikshA' and my response to it.) The only uncomplementary thing about that disciple that is spoken of is this: He undertook a tirtha yatra to Rameswaram against Shankara's advice. He had to pay for it. On the way he stopped at his uncle's house. That man was a stauch advocate of Karma and did not like sannyasis. He conspired to destroy the vivarana that Padma pada had written for the entire Brahma sutra bhashya of Shankara. When Padma pada returned from Rameswaram he found that his painstaking work was 'accidentally' burnt at his uncle's house. Realising his folly of undertaking the yaatra against his Guru's wishes, he pleaded with Shankara to help him. Shankara had seen once just the vivarana portion for the first five paadas (four of the first adhyaya and the first pada of the second). By His phenomenal memory power, the Acharya recounted the entire portion that He had seen and this is what we have as the famous 'Panchapaadikaa', the foundation for the 'Vivarana School' of Advaita. Apart from this, it seems when the Acharya entrusted the work of writing a Vaartikam for the Brihadaaranyaka to Sureshwaracharya, Padmapaada was disturbed. He felt he could have been given that job. He reasoned that Sureshwara, as Mandana Mishra in his earlier life, was a committed Mimamsaka and as such did not really qualify to write a work on Brahmavidyaa. But the Acharya assuaged his feelings by asking him to write the Vivarana to the Brahmasutrabhashya. The name of Sri Padma Paadacharya is invoked with reverence every day when we recite the Guruparampara shlokas. Warm regards, subbu
Guest guest
post number 31305 Thank you subbuji for this valuable write-up on one of the star disciples of Sri Adi Shankara Bhagvadapada . Every time i read this account of how Sanandana got his name 'Padmapada', i am overwhelmed - Padmapada's guru bhakti is not only laudable but worthy of emulation. Yes - the name given to this disciple Sanandana is indeed appropriate -a sisya who is so devoted to the 'lotus' feet of his guru truly desrerves the name 'padma pada' ! Subbuji, Adi shankara himself states in VERSE 3 in his GURUVASHTAKAM : Saãañgádivedo mukhe Sástraivdyá kavitvádi gradyam supadyam karoti manaùcenna lagnam gurorañghripadme tataH kim tataH kim tataH kim tataH kim (3) The Vedas with their six auxiliaries and knowledge of sciences may be on the one's lips; one may have the gift of poesy; and may compose good prose and poetry; but if one's mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? Subbuji , The Acharya is Bhagvadapada - which translated means one who is at the lotus feet of Bhagwan , right? So, if the great Acharya himself is clinging to the lotus feet of the Lord , how can one of his disciple not cling to the lotus feet of the acharya for is not Guru devo bhavah? ( yes - padmapada was not a cheater but a great disciple of the the bhagvadapada ) Subbuji, Adi Shankara himself is Sri Dakshinamurthy ! Adi Shankara's four disciples Sureshwera , Padmapada, Hastamalaka, Totaka are also the manifestations of the four disciples of Sri Dakshinamurthy!THE GURU AND SISYAS ARE ALL 'ONE' AT THE TIME OF JNANA ! so any ninda of sisya is tantamount to ninda of guru - so let us not even classify any one of the bhagvadapada's disciples as a 'cheater' ( KP ! my dear friend, are you reading this ? ) These lines of Sai BHAJAN comes to mind "Manasa Bhajore Guru Charanam, Dustara Bhavasagara Taranam." WORSHIP THE LOTUS FEET OF THE GURU IN YOUR MIND , AND SUCH A GURU WILL HELP YOU cross the ocean of life and death AND LEAD YOU to the shore of divinity. For those of you who do not have a formal Guru , do not despair ! Accept Sri Dakshinamurthy as your formal guru , he will show you the 'real' guru ! For Devi bhaktas, accept Sri Lalitha Mahatripurasundari as your manasika guru for one of her 1008 names is ' Sri Dakshinamurthirupiniyaii namaha' ! Aum sri gurubyo nanmaha!
