Guest guest
LEARNING SANSKRIT AT HOME - WITH THE CORRESPONDENCE COURSE OF THE VEDA ACADEMY Dear Vaisnavas and Vaisnavis, Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. More and more devotees consider knowledge of the Sanskrit language as important for their spiritual life. Even in material society, the interest for this language is steadily increasing, as our experience shows. To offer both groups an easy, but comprehensive entrance to Sanskrit, the Veda Academy has developed a six-months correspondence course for people without or with only basic previous knowledge. This course purposefully does not intend to replace an academic study. Rather, it is meant as a language course for all those who have no inclination or possibility to study at a university. It is not on Ph.D. level, but it will be sufficient for most people, especially for devotees who need Sanskrit for finding a better approach to our devotional life and literature. The advantage of a correspondence course is that you can study independently of space and time. We send you the complete study material, including a 180 min VHS video tape with a training session for writing Devanagari and proper pronounciation. Numerous examples, exercises and homework assignment help you to get a good practise. You are personally attended by a study mentor who corrects your homework and is ready to clear any question you may have. You will learn in this course: o to read and write texts in Devanagari script; o thus gaining a significant advantage for your next India trip since Devanagari is also the script of Hindi; o to pronounce properly any text and mantra; o to form simple sentences in Sanskrit; o to read easy Sanskrit texts and understand their grammatical structure; o to learn many terms from Vedic science, like vastu, ayurveda, astrology, yoga, philosophy etc. and understand their linguistic roots. The examples and exercises are mainly based on the Bhagavad-gita. A further six-months continuation course will train you systematically to understand each of the 700 Bhagavad-gita slokas fully. Thus, after one year study at the Veda Academy you will be able to deeply comprehend the linguistic message of most of our Sanskrit scriptures. The course ends with a voluntary examination. By succesful passing you will be awarded with the "Sanskrit Praveshaka" diploma of the Veda Academy which is part of a comprehensive study of Vedic sciences. The author and current study mentor, Gaura-siromani Dasa (38 years) has been a devotee in ISKCON for 8 years. Before having become a devotee, he studied Physics, Sanskrit and Indology at the Heidelberg university. He also studied our Vaisnava scriptures extensively at the VIHE in Vrndavana where he holds the degree of honor of the Bhakti-shastri course. He serves at the Veda Academy as teacher and seminar lecturer in Sanskrit and Vedic philosophy.
